who promotes the best all around RABBIT DAWG?????

From what I've seen the ARHA Progressive Pack promotes the closest thing that I want in a rabbit dog.
Some of the dogs champions & grands included i've seen run in Little Pack I wouldn't have if they were gave to me.

I (jmo) belive the AKC Mid West promotes a Rabbit Hound,thats what it takes to win. I don't like hounds that create checks and run wild,I don't like a timed check,thats not a true hunting condition. Hounds should be judged by Judges that know how a hound should run a rabbit. I like the rules in SPO and most of the Judges I've ran under was honest good judges,and when a Hound is winning it is usually the hound that deserves it. Rules and formats don't mean a thing if the judges are not honest. If you read and understand the rules in AKC SPO they permote a Rabbit Hound. I'll also throw in that folks don't belive Jump is judged in AKC SPO,well if a hound is jumping rabbits and it runs them right then and get enough done the judges will weigh jump very heavy in their decision.
The hounds are judged on how they run the Rabbit not how fast they can cross a line,they have to work a check right insted of just being the first hound to get it,that permotes a rabbit hound.

yeah dogs run a rabbit good in that format
but if hes winning in the judges eyes and say half way through runs a deer but is back in a certain time
he can still win the hunt
thats not a rabbit dog

Do you honestly think that any hound that is truly running the deer can get back to you in 10 to 15 mins? I don't. I agree with you that they probably should get demeritted for it, but most hounds that are truly running the deer will not come back for a long while.

If you are talking about Wurtland, none of the dogs that placed were gone for more than 15 to 20 mins. The few dogs that didn't go on the deer chase couldn't keep a rabbit going from what the judges said.

just that one large pack
and that was my first and im pretty sure that was my last
so there might not be a time limit on the deer races
sure thought it was a lot longer than that they was gone though
but they still tolerate the off game to much for me
some people like it though
some nice dogs in that format

Sounds like a Judge problem not a Format problem.

This post is pretty funny! Everyone wearing the format they run on there sleeve, defending it till the end. I run in the MidWest and I have seen good and bad dogs in all formats. I have two females at the house that aren't fast enough to run MidWest or Little Pack but both will keep a race going for eternity. So what does that tell me, progressive pack probably has the better true "rabbit dog". Neither dog will ever be entered into a trial but both dogs are worth their weight in gold. Everyone wants speed, I want a dog that can hold onto a rabbit. Picking up a check 50-75 yards away from the point of loss is not my idea of a true rabbit dog. Sorry didn't mean to pick on LP. MidWest have a mixture of close, clean dogs and some that get out a little more than others. Let it lay, run what you love, and don't stir the pot!

Jeff, your right on there. I think we all have our own ideas on what a rabbit hound is. I'm sure there are a lot of you out there that will totally disagree with me but as mentioned above we all have our own ideas.
I'm not much of a gun hunter as I don't eat rabbit(to many better things to eat IMO) so I don't shoot many. But if I did, I would want a hound that is fast as he77 that could bring a rabbit around to the gun where it could be shot and then move on to the next. So, I don't mind a dog that swings some that doesn't keep the track between it's feet or any other faults most beaglers find. The key to me would be to get the rabbit to the gun as fast as possible so I could go after another. Is this the wrong way to think or the right way, only YOU know. I don't think there is a right or wrong.

A rabbit dog is simply this: one that will jump a rabbit and circle it... and do this on a consistent basis. Anything else, the speed they do it in, how they pick up a check, how close the recovery is from the point of loss, if they're straddling the track or winding it running at full speed, what kind of mouth they have, when they start barking, etc... is all semantics and personal preference....... as long as they get the rabbit jumped and moved back to where they jumped it, how can you say it's not a rabbit dog??

This is interesting! Don't see many people saying the best dogs are little pack dogs but look at the vote.HUH! I voted with little pack but think someone said it earlier we run about the same bloodlines in Mid west and little Pack. I think it mainly depends on what you like. Me I like a dog who will hunt jump and run his own rabbit. Also like the hound that will search out there if it can't find it close. think that little pack promotes what I like. Yea sometimes I wish the check count was 10 or 5 seconds sometimes but think that 15 is good because the hounds who usually are searching out there after they look close are the dogs that are usually are the best dogs. And some of the dogs who just stay close might not ever find those long checks because they don't search out there. JMHO!
