Dog speed and packing up ?
Two questions here guys.
#1 At what age can you expect a dog to be at their top speed?
#2 Is it common for a young started hound not to pack up (or try) if he has been soloed alot?
I have a 7 1/2 month old male that is about 12 or 13 inches that hunts like a fool, jumps and runs his own rabbit, and never gets rattled. The only thing is when I run him with the other dogs he won't pack up, It's like he knows they will be out way in front of him and he just don't care so he hunts his own rabbit. Today while runnin he hunted with the other dogs for a bit then kinda wondered off about 30 or 40 yards from the other dogs and they jumped a rabbit but he kept on his own. a few minutes later he had one up and runnin and when it broke down he went to the other dogs but didn't contribute much, after that race ended we headed back to the truck and he got on one up and the other dogs took it and left him behind and he still worked the track a pretty good piece but gave up and went looking for another.
What are your opinions on this topic? I have never started a dog from a pup and don't really know what to expect, That being said I think he will come in fine as time progresses and will be a great hound if not more. He has been started since 3 months old and keeps getting better, the only thing yhat I know to do is keep him runnin but still would like to hear your opinions.
Thanks, Kris

I soled mine until 10 months old or so and it took 6 or more times out with 2 older, slower, but cleaner dogs before he started to pack decently, the first 3 times he done what your dog does, chased his own hare. I think solo him and put him with a couple of not so fast dogs once every 3 times soled or so and it'll be fine. The dogs is still growing alot yet.By 12 months my dog packed good and by 14 months packed great. I ran him with dogs he could handle, but he's fast anyways. Started lots of dogs from pups alone or with other pups and yours seems to act like any other I've started. I like giving them lots of solo experience then when they pack they can contribute and take the lead because thier used to running without a dog in front of it. I started trialing him in CKC LP at 17 months old and he can handle it and place, in a few months your dog will mture alot and if you gun hunt it at 12 months old he will get even better.

7 1/2 months is in my Opinion too young to run with hard hitting older hounds. If you run upper medium or slower dogs, it may work. I try to run my young ones with my slowest dog.

Is the young dog of similar bloodlines as the faster dogs? Some dogs just run a closer, slower line and will not run with faster dogs because they aren't able to get enoughs scent.

Re: Dog speed and packing up ?
he's pretty heavy branko bred and ought to be an upper med foot hound. Thanks for all the input I learn a little more every day same as my hounds
I hope
I think he'll be fine I may just be expecting too much, he's pretty young yet and doing alot allready for his age I think

Re: Dog speed and packing up ?
one thing you need top remember is if you start a young pup you want to run that pup with a slower hound that will let him run all the track he wants,,,,run this hound with a slower dog until the pup starts to take the track away from the older hound then you might want to run this hound with a little faster hound than the slower hound that you started with,,,
here is the big thing and anybody can agree or disagree,,,,
if you run a young pup with faster hounds it will be no time before he
number 1,,,,,,,starts butt barking,,,,,,this means just barking to keep up
or
number2,,,,the dog will end up tight mouthed,,,,,
this pup is very well bred and im not ashamed to feed either of his parents as i do already,,,,
kris just remember this if you want to run him with a faster dog just make it one dog not the whole pack,,,,,,,another thing is if you would kennel mr breeze and outlaw toghter for about a month the would become best of friends and when you dropped out law out then mr breeze mr breeze will be looking for outlaw,,,,,,,,,,,
hope this helps,,,,,,,,but remember all i know about is an old soup hound called

Hey Jeff you got any hounds over there that are a little quicker than babe, mr breeze allready smokes her everytime out
Oh yeah and I definetly don't want an arse barker He's to good of a hound to make in any mistakes with him while he's developing and learning.
Guess that gives me an excuse to run twice as much since I'm gonna have to run my faster hounds without Mr. Breeze and run him with something else, Boy the wifes gonna love that. Oh well She'll get over it
and my hounds will still love me
