Question about breeding

Post by centraliamedic »

Being new to this beagle thing, I am having a great time with it and I am getting a little obsessed. Living on the west coast there isn't as much info, I mean older very experienced people to learn from, which is why I enjoy this site so much. Please excuse any dumb questions.
I saw the ad for a stud book and was wondering if anyone has done artificial insemination, like we do on cows out here. I know of alot of dairy farmers that do this with alot of success in breeding for milk production etc... I have read about the traits eople are breeding for and thought this would be a great way for a guy like me way out here to have access to many more options for breeding.

Yes, A-I is done in dogs but not nearly with the frequency or success as with cattle, etc. Your problem is more likely to be finding a breeder who is having it done with his stud and/or finding a vet that handles frozen or fresh chilled seamen.good luck.

With the cost of fuel and high prices of shipping bitches to the stud dog more and more breeders are using chilled semen or frozen semen. I have done both and they both work fine. I do recommend that you do a surgical insemination for optimum results. A friend of mine just used some 10 year old semen (frozen) and had nice big litters of 7 and 6

Has there ever been a GREAT dog born from artificial insemination???? I have heard coon hunters say they have never seen a GREAT dog from artificial insemination. Coon hunters do this alot more than beaglers.
