coyote dog to take with beagles...

Post by dave404 »

i have lost several to yotes this yr. and several more attacked. yotes gettin thicker every year, so im thinkin of getting a pup of some sort and raise it around my beagles and take runnin with me, what would be best breed (cur, hound, etc...) for this. Wouldnt want it to run the rabbits though but would stay by me or close around and when the yotes start it would kill em or run em off.

One coyote dog will NOT run off A pack of coyote. Most likely your friend the coyote dog will hide behind you. Its much much harder to find a dog thats not afraid of coyote than it is to find a beagle to smoke a rabbit. I dont care what any coyote hunter tells you, they dont have a single dog in their kennel that will run off a pack of coyote by themselves. Be careful, because they will gladly sell you one for big $$$ and promise you it will kill coyote all day but it will not.

I have met over 50 coyote hunters and the only honest ones out there will tell you it takes a special pack of dogs to reak havvoc on coyote, and no single dog can do it by itself.

Coyotes have much tougher coats with thick hair, longer canines, and there twice as quick. To answer your question, you would need a pack of 4-5 good ones, and if your going to do that your going to be MUCH more involved with them than you will your beagles. And yes, they will hark into your beagles and disrupt things.

Im sure were going to hear from some guys that either have a dog that will single handedly kill coyotes, or more likely they have a friend that owns one.

I know guys that have bred pit bulls, rots, and a variety of others into coyote hounds.......bottom line is, domesticated dogs are afraid of coyotes.

I STAND BY THE ABOVE COMMENTS!

not sure about killin a yote but a catahoula would sure give it a shot ...i got one that runs the farm and keeps all the undesireables away including people...lol...plus they are very smart dogs and seem to mind very well...might give it a shot..i dont have as big of a coyote problem as you but i take my catahoula with me to run hounds and she dont disrupt any runs and would take on anything..just a thought..by the way catahoulas are used for catching and baying wild hogs...tough hounds..also have a young male that has been raised with my beagles ...if your interested in giving it a shot let me know...

If I lost a dog to a yote, it would be my personal mission to hunt that area for yotes until I didn't see any more.

i cant think of the name of the breed but they are a big white dog and people put them in with their livestock to keep dogs and yotes out...i know people that have them and they say u couldnt get a better kill dog and they will attack at the yote or wild dog's neck and alot of people say they will trow them in the air by their neck and break their neck just like that but i do know that it might be a chance to take cause they say if it isnt around what its protecting and sometimes rased it will attack anything that comes around it. they are very big dogs and have some what long hair to protect them some

Jr Walker, the breed of dog your referring to is a Great Pyrenees.I've a friend that has one he keeps around his goats and believe me when I say, this is one coyote killing dog.I don't know if this dog has ever been attacked by a pack, but can tell ya if a coyote gets caught in the pasture by this dog it's dead in a matter of minutes as are any stray dogs that try to mollest the goats. This dogs best bud is a walker coon hound that doesn't mix it up with the coyotes but puts the hurt on any coons or possums that get into the feed bins. The pyrenees is very protective of whatever livestock it is trained to protect and a loyal companion to boot. The only down side is feeding this big of a dog.

when guys tell you it takes more than one dog they are full of it i have a female running walker that will hunt jump and run the hell out of a yote ALL BY HER SELF i would even sell or trade her she is a bad bitch i just dont have the time for her any more but is way to nice of a dog to just get ride of so she sets in the kennel till winter hits because that is the olny time we run around here

I don't know about killing or running off, but our ole border collie Duke convinces them yotes the calves are not worth messing with. Sometimes after sitting out on the hill barking all night, he'll come in and sleep most of the day, shift work is hard on an ole dog and I can attest to that... ... He's a big ole cuss, so don't know if it's his bark or bite that keeps them away... ;)

chapkosbeagles,

There are guys all over Michigan that have paid $2000-$8000 for running walkers that cant get the job done by themselves. So......if you have a dog that can, and I seriously doubt it, she is worth a small fortune.

This was a hobby of mine for a couple years. I drove all over michigan, and a trip to wisconsin, to go see the "killer dog" run coyote and kill them. It doesnt happen with one dog. During Jan-Mar, if your dog runs into a pack with a dominant breeding male, your dog will come racing out of the woods and try to get in the box. Ive witnessed this no less than 20 times by guys dogs who they would bet their truck could kill a coyote. After 100+ trips to the woods to see the "best" out there, I think the ones "full of it" are the ones claiming the greatness of their dogs. I was seriously considering giving up beagles due to high number of coyote, but coyote hunters only get a good race about every 5-6 times out and 99% end in a loss where the coyote sits down and the dogs come out of the woods. You might convince everyone on this board that Im "full of it" but Ive seen it and know what the truth is.

If your dog is all its cracked up to be, send me a pm and I will give you the contacts of a couple guys in Michigan that will pay big $$ for a good coyote dog.

There are a lot of people that hunt coyotes with a single dog, or a pair.
However, the guys that run single dogs are often decoy dogs. They go out and challenge the coyote, then when it chases the decoy it runs to you for protection.

The main thing you are looking for in a dog to take running with the beagles is a dog that has the grit to run in on a fight.
I have a young cur (weighs 55 pounds) that flies to the beagles every time they start a chase, obviously he is running in to see what is going on.
With that said, I hope that having him present will be a deterent to a coyote.
Also, if there is a fight he will go in.

I don't want a larger hound for the purpose of going out to run with beagles. If the hound gets on the coyote, he may run it for miles. I want a dog that acts like a herding dog or shepard. Stand guard and if he hears, sees, smells something to go investigate. If it threatens, I want him to be the first line of defense. If a beagle gets attacked, he can get their quicker than I can.

The dog I am using is untested on coyotes, but he has already shown signs around house dogs that he will fly in on trouble.
