Beagle Pain Syndrome

I have a hunting buddy who has a nice female that has Beagle Pain Syndrome. He would like to breed her but doesn't want to take a chance if Beagle Pain Syndrome is an inherited trait. Any info on this would be appreciated!

Bob, I have a friend who had a bitch that had beagle pain syndrome. The vets don't know a lot about it. They used his dog to obtain more information in hopes of furthering their information. They suggested that it could be herditary but were not positive one way or the other.They treated her with prednisone(Ibelieve 5 mg every other day). Unless the dog is an outstanding speciman, I would not even consider breeding,even then I would weigh all factors very carefully before taking a chance on adding addition beagles to the population that could have beagle pain syndrome It is insideous stuff to watch a dog suffer with.

exactly what is beagle pain syndrome?
I have a male that after a day of hunting he'll lay on the floor and whine like something is hurting him but if you talk to him he'll get up with a happy tail and everythings alright. then after awhile he's back to whining.

Beagle Pain Syndrome (BPS) or Necrotizing Vasculitis is a condition of sterile meningitis and polyarteritis. The problem exhibits with cervical pain symptoms, shaking, hunched back stance, fever, lack of appetite, stiff neck, muscle spasms (especially in front legs and neck), lethargy, and unwillingness to move can be noted and theses symptoms may appear quickly. The beagle maybe hesitant to bark and opening of the jaw seems to be painful. Typically is is first seen in puppies from 4-10 months of age but can be seen in older dogs. Male and female beagles are affected equally. Left untreated the first episode may resolve within a few days but a relapse will probably occur within a few months. This same type syndrome is also seen in Boxers and Bernese Mountain dogs.
