A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I use the cedar chips, and have never had any problems. Unless your dog is running a fan in his dog house I don't see how there would be a lot of dust floating around in there, probably the most dustiest time would be when you first bed them down. Then with the eyes, there's greater hazards while running.
I'll be using them, In fact I put a couple extra handfulls in with my buddies hound, I'm running.
Gotta watch running in extreme cold weather, though Joking

I use to use Cedar Chips and now I dont use any wood. I use either straw or hay. The reason being is my friend Rick and I got free cedar chips from a certain WMA, walmart dropped the open bags off, which is pretty cool.
Well my buddy Ricks dog started having some real issues, snorting, coughing, swelling ect..... She snorted a piece of the wood chip up her nose. It lodged, became seriously infected and plagued her for months. The Vet had to remove it and told rick use straw or hay, never use wood chips of any kind.
what I use is BURMADA [sp] GRASS -have nylon foam pad-in truck box ----I always pick up several bails when I'm hunting down south --it dosen't brake down like straw does-- last a long time if you keep it dry --the dogs love it --some of guy's from MISSISSIPPI got me on to it
hey ----PIKE ----one of the pups chased and opened ----he didn't know what he was going to do with when he caught it because the wabbit was bigger than he was
I use cedar chips in my dog box and my dog houses along w/ straw and have never seen a real problem. I've also wondered the same thing though from time to time but I think it's just my worthless mutts :!
I too use Cedar Cips in my dog box and my dog houses. Dogs smell great and I replace each box/kennel every 3 weeks with fresh chips. I do use Pine Shaving also which is much softer than cedar and its a $1 cheaper. As far as nose is concerned you'll have to ask FC Reeder Run Asa if it affected him as he had cedar chips all year round in his dog house and the dog box. He won from Florida to Maine.
Dont know about there effect on the nose but had my male get them in his mouth and put a splinter through the bottom caused a big knot on his jaw cost me $300 to have it fixed at the vet's.
So it appears that cedar chips may be a potential cause for other anomalies but affecting scent is not one of them from what I am able to gather from all the inputs.
I don't like to use straw because it holds mites and other insects.
So, I need to come up with a warm dry bedding that is safe for my hounds.
ya can use the straw just sprinkle some sevin dust over the straw it will stay on the bottom n help with other insects a lil will get on your dog but wont hurt them i have nothing in my houses in the summer but still sprinkle the sevin dust in there houses every few weeks helps with ticks too jb
