She's with pups. If these hounds are AKC registered and you plan to register the pups I hope you took a picture of them tied to prove he's the proud poppa at his age. I could be wrong but I think the male is supposed to be at least 9 months at time of tie.

He must be 7 months old.
Chapter 3, Section 5 of the Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline reads as follows:
"No dog or litter out of a dam under eight (8) months or over twelve (12) years of age at the time of mating, or by a sire under seven (7) months or over twelve (12) years of age at the time of mating, will be registered unless the application for registration shall be accompanied by an affidavit or evidence which shall prove the fact to the satisfaction of The American Kennel Club."

The female is a grade dog. Registration is the least of my concerns right now. It's been so long since I had a dog bred (Rottweilers 1996), that I have pretty much forgotten what I am supposed to do. I have started working on a whelping box. I should have it finished one day next week.

Breeding rottys was a lot of work. I've never bred a beagle, so I'm not sure what to expect. For the most part I'll let nature run it's course.

My advice is put her in the whelping area and leave her alone and let mother nature take care of it. They have been giving birth for centuries and chances are she will have no problem.

That's how this whole thing got started. I took a chance when I let the little rascels play together. I am holding out that there is a chance that she didn't take. Now I have to take a chance on how it all works out. If she does have any male pups, I think I will keep one and name him Chance.

Re: Accidental Breeding-You Be the Judge

My wife and children keep asking me everyday if Mae is going to have puppies. I usually say, "I don't think so." I don't want the kids to get their hopes up yet. Nothing worse than seeing a kid loose a puppy, or find out that there aren't going to be any puppies.

So today I took some pictures of her. If she is bred, then she just isn't showing much @ 7 weeks. You be the judge. The first picture is one of her taken several months ago. The others are pictures of her taken today. I must also apologize for taking these pictures before cleaning the pen out. :bash: Now go ahead, take a look, and tell me what you think.

She's not gonna have pups. Just my opinion. Usually the very first sign is the hair falls out around the nipples -- long before their belly even pooches out...even with a FALSE pregnancy. She's still haired up all around the nipples. If she's with pups, I'll be surprised.

I might add, from the body language in these photos, it's very obvious the orange-colored hound is the dominant one of the two.

Thanks Bev. The orange collared dog (Shadow) gets beat by everybody! She is in heat right now, and this is the only time she gets a little dominant. Usually Mae tears her butt up whenever she gets playful or comes over to her food. Just the past two days Mae has been letting Shadow think she is the Alpha Female.

I don't think she's pregnant. Bred a few sleddog litters over the years and she doesn't look preggers.

I just had a litter about 3 weeks ago and she didn't look pregnant until her milk dropped about 5-6 days before she whelped. My vet wasn't sure until she x-rayed her. Have her x-rayed if you want to make sure.

Oakhill,

This would be her first time. Some days her rearend is swollen others not so much. I didn't look this morning when I went out. After her last heat cycle she started looking the same way, but it didn't last this long. Both of her sisters do the same thing. They swell up (gain weight) after their cycle, and about a month later they return to normal.

I just thought I would know for certain by now. Yesterday was the beginning of the 7th week. Hopefully she didn't take. Meanwhile I'll keep an eye on her.

Tits look awful big for a hound nevering having pups. You still have 3 wks to go so I would keep an eye on her. I have had some not show until two weeks before. There still is a chance I would say but probably not a good one.
