Re: Whats the different
dogs can be funny creatures at times, I can not run mine at trials because they are a bunch of potlickers with no papers, ask one of my hounds if he could read and he just started scratcthing fleas so he dont care either. to the point had a bubby come run last year with his hounds and my two males didn't seem to want to pack up and run with his, at the time I had a female in heat and it seemed they only had one thing on their minds. note also my buddies hounds were the run to catch type hounds and mine are medium to fast hounds but I don't think that was the cause of them not running with my buddies hounds. they have run with other hounds before even trials hounds and it didn't make a difference. They run fine with my club buddies hounds. Exposure to different type of pressures when they are young I believe can make a difference in some hound, then there are hounds that are born with more drive and determination and they do what they are breed to do hunt, whether its trials or gunned.
Re: Whats the different
Yes, but we can't say this was exclusively from pressure. Many trialers condition their hounds to run in mixed or strange company from the getgo, so these have the advantage of not letting strange packmates bother them.
I remember one trial I went to and was shocked when after 3 min. they called a dead track and lifted the hounds to hunt for another, but most had already quit or were off on the other hill looking...
... As hunters, we make hounds keep trying till all hope is gone, for there are cycles where that "one" may be the only rabbit in the field that day...
A hound that can go like he** for an hour don't prove he can last the day or "stick" to the only rabbit in the field when the going gets to rough and patients and levelheadness are called for, to hold any chance of recovery. Trials must keep moving to get over with...

Re: Whats the different
I have only been to one Field Trial but i have been to a lot of ARHA Progressive Pack Hunts and a few Little Pack Hunts. The bigest difference that I see if you have a good tight mouth dog that only opens when the rabbit is up and running you woln`t win. Unless its your buddy judging your dog. I think 3 and 4 minnutes is way to long for a strike. I think it should be about 1 minnute or less.If they cast the dogs somewhere where there is lots of rabbits and a mouthy dog opens , it will more then likely get a strike and the dog that struck and jumped the rabbit gets nothing. The Field Trial I went to ran slow dogs and they thought all ARHA dogs were ruff. I knew who was going to win before it was even over. The judges judge each round and never had to run fast. The dogs all stayed tight in the check and if you was rabbit hunting over them you would kill a lot of rabbits. They did not drive the rabbit into the next county like I like . When i do see a rabbit when my dogs are running him he is moving real fast or he will get caught. The best dogs I ever seen have never had a rabbit killed over them with a gun.

Re: Whats the different
Hey mouse I don't think pressure had anything to do with them not packing. They are young and I put 8 dogs down that they didn't know. I think a few trips together and they would be right there. When you and Ryan cut loose Saturday afternoon they did a fine job, nothing wrong with those dogs. I actually like the little pack format it's the most like hunting I've seen but the clubs are just too far from me, besides my wife and I have the grandbaby about every Saturday and they grow up so fast I am trying to spend as much time with her as I can and balance everything else too.
Re: Whats the different
Thanks JB, They do alright for a bunch of potlickers, pups are doing great ,I am going to keep one and I am looking forward to starting her this fall. Hope YOU and your family is doing well , looking forward to getting together again.

rabbitearl wrote:This question was ask at the last trial. What the different between a gun dog beagle that is hunting all the time than a beagle that trials all the time. There all till running a rabbit. We had a lot of input on this at the club. Please just your opion not jump on somebody eles opion.
From what I have seen, read, and heard there isn't any difference. A good trial dog in one area may not be a good trial dog in another. A good trial dog in one format may not be so good in another. A good gun dog for one rabbit hunter may not be for another. Your cull might be the best dog another man's treasure. Your treasure may be another man's cull. Etc....
I've come to the conclusion that the differences are not in the dogs, but rather in the people who own, run, breed, and judge them.
Nothing could be finer!

Re: Whats the different
Fellers here is my opion on this.In the last 10 years that I have hunters to come and run there dog, sometimes in a day i will have 15 different pack of dog and I ve got two pen that donot have many rabbits in it cause some hunter wants there dog to look a rabbit.I notice that the one that rabbit hunt want this kind of pen and the ones that trials donot. They want a pen that got alot of rabbits so when they lose one they can find another one easy. They just donot have the jump power.I know that there are some of you that wants to jump down my back but i not seen it.They can run one easy but it like the man said once if my dog are running a rabbit and someone shoots the rabbit, my dogs will be lost.I think it good if your dogs can be gun over and run in trials. But 80 percent of the fellers that comes to run donot hunt. They can really run a rabbit but I would not go hunting with them.Rabbits around here are hard to find. You know when you rabbit hunt you shoot a rabbit then its time to find another. It like a man told me one time that the running part is more imported than the jump part.I told him if I got a gun in my hand we are not going to here him run long. I am not putting down trial cause I do about 20 trials a year this is just what I notice over the years. But thanks fellers for the feed back.

Re: Whats the different
In my location there is so many hare in places it's Scary. You don't want to take dogs there. We still have dogs that immediately go for the jump of the next hare as soon as they see you got the last one. Fenced areas can't be good for a hound, specially the smart ones. Run in the wild and shoot over them as much as you can. That will usually make a good trial dog in itself.
