question for guys with upper medium and fast hounds

Post by THALL »

i got a couple bitches that are fast, plenty of hunt, and good line control. They are close in the check, but will reach if they can't smell the rabbit. I like these bitches a lot. My question is what to breed to and add nose and not loose the things above that i like. Stud dogs or blood lines?

how much you wanting for ol ringo blood yellowdog.

I have a nice bitch but she is still young. One of the reasons I don't want to breed her is she shy's up around strange dogs. Why I don't know. Only thing I can come up with is the very first time I introduced her to other dogs they all ganged up on her because she was coming into heat. A few males dogs kept jumping on her. She didn't hunt that day she was scared. Ever since she won't go with strange dogs.

With just my dogs she's a hunting machine. Likes the front and a fairly quick hound. She's in the 14inch range. She is the daughter out of my big male tracking Pistol I got from tennessee. Her and him are always battleing eachother when they are on a rabbits. Them two are always up front. She does some decent check work and has jumped her fair share of rabbits. Sometime is a little cold nosed opens early before the rabbit is up she got that from her mom. My dog pistol opens when the rabbit is out of its bed. Might make some decent rabbit dogs two of them together (ringo and Leah).

I just hate that she won't go with strange dogs. Won't pack up for nothing. I don't mind because i hardly run with others. Every once and awhile.

I have a dog out of Townline Kennels and he has a nose on him. I have seen him work out some lines in pretty crappy conditions and bring the rabbit to the gun. I have a Branko female out of Lumberjack and has a real good nose on her too. My Townline male though has a better nose though. I have seen him role with a track before the other dogs begin to bark then down the line the others pipe in.

There are lots of dogs with "big noses" but a nose without brains is a ..... There's nothing wrong with adding nose but be sure whatever you breed to has brains also. You say you want more nose, my question to you is this. Can a dog smell what isn't there and do you want dogs that let the chase die at the point of loss because they can't smell what isn't there? My opinion is this, if you can't smell it here then go where you can. But do it with style and without being crazy about it. When gun hunting reaching can actually save the chase. I've been to spo trials here in VA and have seen what the rabbit did, and watch the dogs kill the chase because they wouldn't move 2 or 3 feet to the left or right during a check. They spent so much time going back and not advancing that the judge said, "Oh well, the rabbit went to a hole, lets get another one up that wants to run." So correct me if I'm wrong, is this what you want?

I hate a dog that gets "hung" up in a check. I agree 100%, if you can't smell it here get to where you can. You're completly wrong. I don't mind a dog that gets wide in a check as long as he don't miss a squatting rabbit. I just want to add nose and not loose speed or hunt.
