I had a good pup from Shiltds line of patch hounds really a good hunting and running pup sold her to Sandy valley kennel. Very good blood line of dogs. I was kicked out of a beagle club because I was running Hare hounds. Go Figure.

I don't know why you don't see more Patch Hounds in the trials, I have several. Some of them are big hounds as bobbeagles said and I use them to chase coyote. The others are mostly 14 "-15" hounds and they chase cottontail and hare. Most of my buddies that have the Patch just like to run hounds, They don,t care about trophies or titles they just like to run. As for myself, I am the same way I just like to run my hounds and I don't care if anybody else likes them or not, They make me happy and thats all that matters. I have found that there are no mediocre Patch Hounds, They are either good or their not worth feedingand the not worth feeding doesn't come very often. JMO.

amen reddog1 thats about the way i feel about them to. they either got it or they don't. I run mine for me and i know what i got and what i don't got. and considering the running time my dogs are seeing lately im happy with what i got. But in my opionon what i have seen most patch hounds if given a chance make pretty good rabbit dogs there not for everyone. most ive seen not all but most seems the males start a little latter than the females but catch up quick. some do over size but ive crossed mine some to get some nice 14" hounds. but to me and this is the biggest reason i like the patch hounds is there hunting instinct seems to be very high as pups they always seem to have there noise down smelling for something. these are just my thoughts and opions from my exsperiance with the patch hounds.

There's an old joke among the patch folks that goes, "If you see where a patch hound won a trial, he sure had to earn it".
Mostly white hounds stand out in a pack so whether good or bad, it will be seen... ;)
Mike Yates said he always tried to breed more colour into his so it would more hide the faults... ... He was a great guy and knew the disadvantage he was under taking a mostly white hound to the trials...
Today there seems to be good number of hounds placing in trials with more than just the white points and the collar around the neck. The more white sure are alot easier to see in the field to me... ;)
If you can't get a patch under the wicket on a beagle board, what chance have you got at a field trial...
I'm with reddog, have fun at the trials, but hunting is where it's at... :D

MAYBE I WORDED THAT WRONG i am just wondering why they are called patch hounds? when they are just a beagle is it because of the line of blood, or the guy that first started the line. i have nothing aginst the size of a dog you all know i just want the best one lol but are they a particular cross why are they not just called a lemon and white if it is just a pure breed beagle

Patch is a blood line of beagles, the line traces back over 100 yrs. Started by Willet Randall in the Adirondacks. The reason I like this line is because of their timelessness and because they are a "hunting" line. They haven't gotten their noteriety by winning tons of trials, but through the word of mouth of serious gun hunters. They are an AKC reg. line of purebred beagles, though the average Joe thinks that the only purebred beagles are blanket back tris. :D
By the way, patch hounds come in a variety of colors, not just lemon/white.
