Subaru makes the same little vehicle in a small truck. The bed is just big enough to fit a dog box inside. It has 4 full size doors and gets around 28 mpg. I believe thats going to be your best bet for an off road machine. Toyota messed up there little trucks and they aren`t as freindly on gas now. The retail is great, but the mpg isn`t as good as the older 4cyl. There is no way I would trade my full size Chevy@ 18-19 HWY mpg for a little Toyota that barely clears 20 mpg.

Folks, I've got a 92 chevy work truck with a 6 cyl auto and a 99 Chevy Z-71 with the BIG V-8 and they both get 18 MPG. I had a Chevy S-10 that was so small I'd never go back for 6 or 7 more miles to the gallon.

i have a 94 toyota with a 4 cyl auto and get 26 miles to the gallon,,,,,,

Re: Good MPG hunting vehicles
My full size Z71 Silverado gets around 21mpg highway and don't see any advantage for a few more mpg in a lighter truck.
My next vehicle will be a cross between a wagon and SUV, like the Forrester style made by Subaru or something with 4x4 similar. I will bet there will be many new vehicles marketed in the next few years in this style. Keep your eyes open in 2009.

I have a '04 Colorado Z71 5 cyl. quad cab and drive back and forth to Little Rock every week, abouta 2.5 hr. drive one way. I usually get about 23 mpg., maybe more at times. This little truck has always got me where i wanted to go, and has the power to do it. Gas keeps going up, has anybody figured out how to put a dog box on a horse?

I had a 05' Tacoma extended cab V-6 with manual 6speed the fuel economy was 18-21 MPG . Got rid of it and got a 06' GMC Sierra extended cab w/ 5.3 V-8 and auto tranny the fuel economy is 18-22 MPG so I don't think the small trucks are the answer.

Re: Good MPG hunting vehicles
Man there must be something wrong with my '06 Silverado 5.3L. I have never gotten better than 15 or 16 mpg even on the highway. That thing sucks the gas. I put slightly bigger tires on, but it was that way even before I put them on. I have been thinking about the Subaru Baja myself. Looks like the way to go!

Re: Good MPG hunting vehicles
You fellows are making me mad with your gas milage. I have a 94 Nissan extended cab 4X4 auto that is getting 16 mpg and a 2007 Toyota Tundra 4X4 double cab 4.7L that is only getting 14-15 mpg on the highway, I love the truck but hate the gas milage. I had a 2001 Toyota Tundra access cab 4.7L that was getting 21 mpg on the highway.

2007 GMC Sierra quad cab, 4x4, 5.3, fuel management system, 20-21 MPG. The 5.3's get better mileage than the 4.8's. They don't have to work as hard to pull the heavy truck.

Re: Good MPG hunting vehicles
here is what I hunt and run dogs in around home..it gets about 40 mpg..took a little getting used to driving on the right hand side but now I love it. Wouldn't own another atv.Just wish you could get a plate for the road.I would drive it everywhere..it actually rides and drives very smooth. I heard that in some states they are road legal..dunno which ones.
btw
I'm looking at a hybrid Ford Escape 4x4 30 mpg in the city..

Bradadkins, what do you call it, better yet what is it, where did you get, never seen one. Is it a atv size or small truck, the tires are throwing me off. Just curious.
