Ticks!!!

Post by padeerhunter »

Have been taking our pup out everyday getting him on rabbits and everyday we find ticks on him and usually more than one. I'm surprised they are out this early in the year, it is still getting down into the low twenties most night here yet. We took him to the vet and got him on Advantix. My question--is there a preventive medicine for people to take? I'm worried come summer when it's real warm and we take him out about us!! We have been keeping him in the house, but I'm having second thought on this....

padeerhunter,
I use the frontline plus on the dogs and for us I use the citrus off, around the boots, and pant legs use the super duper stuff that would kill and elephant when going out in the brush, the frontline plus don't keep the crawlies completely off but will help keep em out of the house... Another thing is there is dog whipes adams flea and tick you can wipe down your dog before heading to the brush.

I have a couple dogs in the house and don't seem to find many ticks usually find more on me from being out in the brush then the critters on the dog. I do however brush them and check them over.

I have learned the dang things are just a fact of life out here... Man I miss Oregon in the Summer... NO Creepy Crawlies...

I have heard from someone on this board (to remain nameless unless they pipe in) to shower from head to toe with a dog flea and tick shampoo before you go out hunting/running and nary a tick will attach itself to you..... I haven't tried it, but if the ticks get too bad I certainly would. I hate ticks!

There is some stuff that you can treat chaps and leggings with called permethrin. Sporting goods stores sell it and it is excellent. You have to spray it on outdoors and it lasts for several weeks. It is toxic until it dries.

We use Cutter about $4 for a 3 pack (like Frontline) and we did not see a flea or tick on any dogs last year.

I've used peretherin on my dogs for a long time and it works really well. I use a plastic 55 gallon drum and fill it about 3/4 full with water and mix in the permetherin. It last a long time and and I just add a little permetherin ever now and then. About once a month when I come in from hunting I just dip the dogs in the barrel before putting them back into the kennel. After a while I'll empty the barrel by putting the mixture into a srayer and spray the kennel and yard. Then I mix up a new batch and I'm ready to go again. This way you can treat a large number of dogs and keep both them and your kennel area free from fleas and ticks at a low cost. I don't use it on puppies under six months of age but on older dogs I've never had a problem.

I use Frontline Plus on both of my dogs once a month.

When the ticks get heavy, my vet said to use it every three weeks.

When I start noticing them on me, I'll spray down with Cutter really good around my ankles, calves, and any bare skin.

I'll also wear a white t-shirt because its easier to see them little bastards!

This last part is advice for the married guys: When you get home from running, take a good shower and get your spouse to check your "areas" for ticks.
This can lead to other things! :D
