HJunting While In Heat

Post by mark mattis »

Is there anything that I can use on my female in order to hunt her while in heat? Appreciate any help offered.

I am having the same problem. My female is my best dog. she has one heck of a nose. but about a week ago she came in heat and now i have to put her up. My dad said that if I took her it would cause me all kinds of problems with the other beagles and the other dogs.

You can hunt her with just other females, they don't care about heat cycles. Just have to be careful about other male anythings in the area...

Don't hunt with any males or put your female in the pen.

Check in some of the dog supply catalogs that are out there, I think there is a spray that you can use to mask their odor and still hunt with them.

I have all females and hunt them while in heat. I keep a bottle of Vicks Vapor Rub and some burnt motor oil in my dog box and just smear some of either one all over the rear end area including her back legs near the top.

Some females hunt and run as good while in heat and some do not.

I would not take the chance. She may not come the to party wearing her perfume but if you've ever seen that movie, Dirty Dancing, it wouldn't matter  . It's not always the boys that drive to pick up the girls, most of the girls today have their own cars  ...

I think it would be best to leave her at home- you never know what you'll run into in the woods.
Also, maybe my dogs are just goofy, but my females do care when another is in heat- they play at going at each other and climbing all over one another. So, like I said, maybe mine are just weird.
My point is, better to be safe than sorry.

Ditto on what Bev said. You never know what other potlicker is running loose in the woods. It is just not worth it. This may seem crazy but I keep my females that are in heat in my dog trailer, where I know nothing else can get to them. I have seen males walk wire to get to a hot female, I have also seen hot females walk wire to get in with a male. I don't take any chances I just keep them in the trailer. I will tie them out for awhile when I am in the yard, and I will let them out several times a day, but I don't take any chances.

You are right Big Dog, I remember one of the best runners I have ever owned that hung herself trying to get to a male when she came in heat. Thanks for letting me know about the spray Windy....Tony

When I was trialling, I soloed trial bitches while in heat. I sweat bullets and ran over them the whole time though! The sprays I have seen do not much do the trick. Good thread and ideas all. Doc S
