Traditional brace at Nutmeg Beagle club (video)
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
You can laugh, cry, or what ever, but this kind of trial has gone on for more yrs than any other format out there.
They are judged the same way every trial, and you know from the beginning what kind of dog it takes to win or place in these trials.
This is an OLD mans sport and this is what they love to do, so give them a break.... someday YOU will not be able to run your legs off either after dogs that loose the rabbit more times than not.
These dogs are well taken care of and loved just as much as you love your dogs.....

Back around 1970, I had an uncle from the Webster Co. Beagle Club in Pa. who would give me hounds that weren't suitable for brace trials. They were pure gold for a 10 year old boy with a willing dad and a .410 single-shot. They weren't nearly that slow, I would guess them to be about a 4-5 by today's standards. I went to the club with him several times to watch his competition hounds "run" and they were faster than that. I would say the hounds in the video had to be a 1 speed (at least they didn't walk backward). I'm guessing the hounds he ran brace with were a 3-4 compared to those. I'm going to say that brace hounds are even slower now than they were 37 years ago. I counted 9 barks from the lead hound without moving one leg. I wouldn't want my hounds to bark 9 barks in a hole, much less without picking up their feet even once. Brace has gotten a little ridiculous. One more thing, my uncle's dogs were above-average competitive, and would jump their own rabbits. Rabbits for the hounds in the video were jumped with a stick. Tally ho and away we................................................................stand.

Went to a trial advertised as an SPO trial Well it was BRACE Dogs were drawn out placed on the line mine was third on the line and the Rabbit was sittin in the trail just about 10 yards in front of the hounds......Well SHE SEEN it.. LMAo off she went PICK her Up They said. I said WHY she went around the other Dogs!!!! And is Runnin our rabbit!!!! i said you want her picked up YOU catch her LOL....
I stayed the rest of the Day talked to the old Boys that were there learned A lot about what they were lookin for. PRECISION!!They want the dog to hit every track and stay on the line.. Was told if Mine had went Under the other dogs She would have stayed Down until She Swung out off the track (about 20 yards LOL) i learned a lot that Day and Went on to judge 3 trials for them Folks...they love their hounds the same as we do ours just like a different Style and i will Say those hounds Got a NOSE on em.
I Will never knock em just let em Do what they like...We aint feeding them and to each their own.....
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

you would think they would like to see a huntable dog at these trials. i was in the same point you were at gundog brace trial and will never go to another. they picked up mine for the same thing. dog never missed a beat went thru 4 blocks and called up.for crying out loud we are looking at hunting dogs here not brace dogs. why have a brace judge judge a gundog trial?

i bet a old man like me could judge them hounds.
Not my style of hounds, my grand pa own a couple hounds like that and we shot hundreds of bunnies off of them but was not exciting enough for me, thats when Pa would brake out the Pusher hounds he called them and then the hunt would really get exciting. No rabbits setting on the trails waiting on the hounds any more.

I had to look twice just to see if the dog was moving, I bet the rabbit was laughing and saying they can't catch me.

The second hound is staying in the draft of the lead dog, and down the stretch they come rolling that peanut
