This stuff is why I am completely fed up with Little Pack.

Jimmie most of the time I do go ahead and score it, but we had about three dogs in that cast that had similar mouths and they were running in real thick cover and were a little ways off from us. I was on my hands and knees trying to crawl through it, it was so thick. But I didn't score it because I was only 80 - 85% sure. Especially in two or three dog casts when it don't take long to pick the dogs out, if for some reason I don't get there in time, I'll score it just about everytime.

All cell phones in the truck. You want to hunt or talk on the phone?

Re: cell phone and judging in lp
I would have told him what i thought about it and i wouldnt have said a word if he would have said hey i gotta go and closed his phone when a dog opened his mouth and let out at a dead run to get his job done...but talking on the phone not keeping up is way outta line
Re: cell phone and judging in lp
read the rule book no were in it does it read a judge must see anything nor does it say a judge must run with the hounds not that i agree with it but thats the way it reads i would much rather be judged by a true houndsman that can not keep up with the hounds than some sprinter that knows nothin about hound work

I dont think anyone said this judge in question, who ever it was, couldnt keep up.
This is just an example of not taking it serious and not putting forth any effort.

here is the thing carn, like in that cast that day,you had two mouthy dogs poppin off everywhere on the snow, goin 20 to 30 feet then comin back, then ya had two true mouth dogs that when they opend, the rabbit was movin, now, with all the barkin and lying that goes on in just about every lp cast, how can you honestly judge by ear and bring back the right hound without givin two or three checks to a mouthy hound, and keep in mind,my dog lost by 10 points to one of the mouthy dogs, plus, three of the four dogs in the cast sounded almost excactly the same.
i shouldnt say this but i will, carn,no disrespect, but, guess who this judge and everyone else says taught him hoew to judge???????

like i said in an earlier post, when he wants to judge,he is one of the best out there.
this post wasn't an attempt to bash him or anyone,he is a good guy, but,.that day

I haven't commented on this topic because everyone knows that the judge was wrong in the situation you described.
A judge is typically getting paid $15 to $20 an hour to judge hounds.
The judge has an obligation to give the cast of hounds his hour.
As a handler you don't have to sign the scorecard. If the majority of the cast doesn't sign the scorecard the MOH will have to consider doing something about it.
This goes back to judging itself. I feel that a lot of judges don't really want to judge, but they feel they are letting the club down if they refuse. So they go out, hung over, hurt, tired, or just not feeling like judging. They are not doing anyone a service by judging when they don't feel like it. The biggest problem I have while judging is handlers that either are too competitive and try to push the judge to influence his calls, handlers that don't know the rules, or handlers that just like to argue.
As far as scoring a check. I try hard to see each check, sometimes I can't make it. If I know which dog got the check I will award it. If I have any doubt, I do not score it. Once the pack drives out of the check, you are running to the next one and you are wondering to yourself which dog got it, don't score it.

Re: cell phone and judging in lp
I have only competed in 1 trial and it was a PP trial. A male that I had in a cast that my sister handled for me the judge said my hound probably scored higher in reality than the scorecard showed because by the bark he was almost positive it was my dog but the area they ran was so thick he couldn't actually get in there and see as much as he would have liked to so he couldn't score all of the checks. My dog still finished 3rd and would have maybe won the cast or at least taken 2nd but what can you do. At least the judge tried and was honest. HE MADE THE EFFORT which is the only fair thing to do.
I understand what you're trying to say but if you can't see the dogs and don't know the dogs bark then I don't care how you look at it, it's not fair. And I also don't care if you're tired, hung over, sick or whatever if you can't make the effort to judge properly then you need to take your name out of the hat for that day and let/make someone else judge.carn wrote:i would much rather be judged by a true houndsman that can not keep up with the hounds than some sprinter that knows nothin about hound work

danny how do you keep up with these hounds and score them... I know that you don't run with them the full hour every step of the way and I know you have scored dogs without seeing what happened...This post is getting kinda old we all know how it should be done and how it doesn't get done....( with that being said you show me a perfect format and I will go join tomorrow)
Re: cell phone and judging in lp
you guys must have somespecial sense because myself i always hear a dog bark not see it bark and as for a judge to tell he or she heard your hound get a check and not score it when he knew it was your hound what a joke.danny i think i know who your talking about i tried to train it but it knows everything should have been culled a long time ago judges the wrong end of the leash but clubs know this and still use it every weekend???????
