Sat/Sun Hunt.....Pics & Video had a great time

Post by Joeyman »

We finally had some great running again after a few weeks of very poor hunting. The temps were in our favor this weekend in the 40's which helped out alot. Saturday I spent the morning hunting with Mike. We had 8 dogs down and had a blast. We jumped 8 rabbits from 8:00a.m to 11:00a.m. and managed to bag 4 of them. We had some sight chase's and a few long runs. A couple rabbits went staight to the hole. I don't blame them if I were a rabbit I wouldn't want this pack of dogs after me..lol

These are Mike's dogs. He has some real mighty fine dogs. I really like that Sadie she is my favorite.

Sunday we put the dogs down at a different CA area closer to home. Some of the best running in a few weeks. Nice long runs lasting roughly 30 minutes. A few rabbits would take the dogs for a ride all over the place. It was nice to hear the dogs pound the ground. We jumped 9 rabbits and took home 5. Not bad at all. Mike went home early so I stayed a little while longer by myself. Just me and the hounds. I got 2 by myself after Mike went home.

Here are the 4 I shot.

Here is the one Mike brought home. I shot this rabbit at about 50 yards away. It took a tumble I ran over to it picked it up and put it in my vest. I thought it was dead. It wasn't the rabbit was still alive. We started looking at it and it was fine. I saw a tiny bit of blood on it's back leg. So we let is loose in the bed and it almost got away from us. It tried to jump out but Mike caught it again. So he took it home to let his pups sight chase it on his property. This was the 5th rabbit

here is video after I shot it.That is my small female Daisy she did a good job on this run. Leading the pack most of the chase.

Here is another pic of a rabbit Daisy jumped out of a large brush pile. She kept digging and digging and started barking So I stood on the top of the brush pile and out shot the rabbit. One shot right in the head. It was very quick.

Image

Daisy jumped yet another rabbit out of another brush pile up ahead. I missed this rabbit as it shot out of there. The rabbit decided to run all the way to another county thru these pines. It holed somewhere up there after about 10 minutes on the run.

I had a fun weekend.

Looks like fun!

The first time I watched the video, I got something about Happy New Year!!! So, I closed out and reloaded and got the dog. :D

I haven't had running like that in a very long time.

Yeah I think that is what they are. I don't run shock collars on my dogs. Those belong to Mike aka (Done Gone Beagles) He uses them on his dogs. From what I can tell they work pretty good. He really likes them they do a good job.

thanks for the kind words. I had a blast this weekend.

As far as jump shooting. I've been around other people who taught me that way of hunting. I really don't see anything wrong with how I got the one rabbit out of that brush pile that way. I sent all the dogs inn. They were working the brush pile. My small female started barking a lil then she started digging. So I hurried up stood on top of the brush pile and waited. When the rabbit ran out of their I waited a second so I could get a good shot on it and I took it down. What's wrong with that. I must be missing something. Let me think.....Send the dogs inn, rabbit comes out of brush pile, I shoot it. huh

All the other rabbits were taking in front of the dogs about a couple circles each.

Joey, dont get too defensive, its all personal preference I guess...I was just wondering why if you have good dogs like it appears you DO have that you would either risk a jumpshoot when one of your hounds was that close, and why shoot the rabbit before a good run...??

Like I said, its a personal preference, but I like to hear my hounds run and don't let ANYONE with me to jumpshoot if I can keep them from it...

No offense intended.

Sorry didn't mean to sound defensive? Sometimes I like to hunt that way. Sometimes we like to hear a good race. We mix it up I guess. We had jumped up quite a few that day and most them kept going to the hole. I was pretty much surrounded by brush piles I was afriad that it would have run to another brush pile and hole up. It happened when we were hunting off a creek bed earlier in the day.

Now the one rabbit that ran thru the pines, My female jumped it out of a brush pile in the same area. This one ran way up there all the way thru the pines. So I started walking about half way in. I waited just listening to the pack for about 10 minutes. I waited and waited for it to come back. It never did the dogs got quite I gave them about 5 minutes and I started walking towards them. The rabbit holed in a brush pile up ahead. All the dogs were climbing thru it. That is the biggest reason why I killed the one so quick.

The dogs were about 2 feet away from me when the rabbit shot out of there. I was standing up high on top of the brush pile. Dogs pretty much under me. When the rabbit got about 20 yards or so that is when I took the shot.

I like to hear the dogs run too, but I can do that for the other 10 months of the year that I can't hunt...lol. If I'm in an area full of groundhog holes and have one hole up, the next one won't get the chance(assuming I can hit it). Of course, I only hunt with one dog, so it's kind of tough to lose track of her. Beautiful dogs, by the way.
