Has anyone lost a beagle to a coyote
Around here Ive heard of hunters loosing a beagle to the coyotes and was wondering if this has happened to any fellow rabbit hunters, When I run my beagles late in the evening , that thought comes to mind

I lost a hound to coyotes 4 years ago. Didn't even fnd his collar, they dragged him off and I never found a trace. Running in the same area and carrying some firepower about a month later and they started howling at the hounds, trying to get them to come to them.

I was runnin a little female that had a squeel sound to her in a cornfield right next to a railroad track. I was standing up on the tracks looking out into the corn still standing when i heard her make a noise like i had never heard her make. She was running a rabbit when all at once she made this crazy sound. The first thing that entered my mind was that something had grabbed her. I let out a holler and i swear i believe a coyote dropped her. She came running to me like she was scared to death. She had a cut on the back of her neck about like a tooth mark. Never seemed to bother her she went right back to huntin the next time out..im sure some of you had much worse but that was my lucky experience. You have to remember she was pretty hard to catch...she was ate up with hunt.
Re: Has anyone lost a beagle to a coyote
I lost a pretty good small male this past November. I was running close to evening and my dog was on a rabbit, the next thing I know his barks turn to yelps and squalling. Unfortunatly by the time I got up to him the damage was done. He wasnt torn up badly , but the bites around his neck were severe and he only lasted about 15 minutes. It was one of the saddest things that I have ever seen, because the dog kept trying to get up and keep going.
I have since killed 4 coyotes in that general area and am on constant lookout.

Re: Has anyone lost a beagle to a coyote
I haven't lost one yet, and I hope I it never happens. I had two coyotes attack my pointer/lab about three years ago. Last spring I had another coyote chase three of my females back to the house. Yelling, throwing sticks and rocks didn't even bother him. He came within 20 yards of me and continued chasing them. A few months after that a neighbor of mine Italian Greyhound was ripped apart by two coyotes. I sure hope SC does something to help with the yote population!
Nothing could be finer!

Yotes are worse on dogs around here from mid Feb. through the spring. I'm thinking they start pairing up in Feb. and have hungry young'uns to feed a couple months later.
Feed and hunt what you like!
Re: Has anyone lost a beagle to a coyote
ive lost 3 good ones to the yotes and im telling you seems the more i kill the more they are of them. Ive had one killed of a night lost one good female hunting one morning they came right in on my pack my 3 big males jumped one yote and keep him down long enough for me to kill but i lost the female. Another female they ran her down and like one of the other guys said dragged her off i eventually found her collar all mangled up. I used to love running them of a night but i want anymore unless its in a pen or something. Used to never be a yote around here always been told they turned them loose because of the deer population if its true there stupid becasue its destroyed alot of the turkeys and has pressured the rabbits bad to. My training grounds 5 to 10yrs ago was a great spot ive jumped as many as 20 rabbits there in a single day now im lucky if i can jump 3.

Guys this bites the big one. Took the hounds this morning having a good day then all heck breaks loose. I got 3 hounds that are decent a good fellow on this board named Redsrule got me one that i bought for my son have had about 1 1/2 months now his name STONE COLD. Dog was little hard to handle sometimes but he was coming around to me and son Andrew. Anyway like I was saying all heck broke loose was in this this hollar they got rabbit up ran it to the head of it I was waiting for it to circle just as I heard the dogs on the way back I heard CRYING OUT,GROWLING like dogs were fighting. My first thought they caght the rabbit as I headed that way it getting worse so i went from a fast walk to dead run I found 4 of the biggest coyotes i have ever seen attacking my dogs i ran hollaring and sceaming but they just kept after my dogs. One of them got away ran toward me i could see blood everywhere on her she's my lemon + white 2 of yotes followed her once she got behind me i let get close enough to kill the sobs. The 2 males were still going at it STAN + STONE COLD one them had Stone down on his back mauling the *** out him so i reloaded shot real fast in the air they took off reloaded again tryed to killem but got away. Turn back to my dogs they're whimpering and whining blood everywhere Rosie just had few cuts nothing real bad just scared STAN was tore pretty good he is still at the vets still touch and go STONE COLD didn't make it the vet said his insides were crushed from all the biting he said he was in alot of pain so had him put him down. Now the thing that really hurts is your son comes home from school and says " wheres my dog at daddy can we go run them this afternoon " what happened to Rosie?? So I begin to tell him he starts sqalling tearing my guts out i tell i am sorry for what happened he has been in room ever since. Any advice i hope he doesn't blame me. Redsrule tell Jimmy i am sorry. Just posted OPEN SEASON yesterday i guess they struck first.

Re: Has anyone lost a beagle to a coyote
I kind of wished I had of given it a little more thought before starting this post, for it doesnt seem to be a good one. I have two beagles that I turnout and let run on there own, I know this isnt the best thing to do, but we have a small farm, and I like for them to get out and get some exercise , when Im tied down and cant hunt with them. The other morning I could here some coyotes howling in the far distance. And thats when I thought about the beagles running on there own. Yesterday me and my son got out the varmint call and went up on the farm to see if we could call any in, but no luck which might be a good thing. Only thing we had come in was a cat, my son wanted to shoot it, but I said no, but gave in after enough, come on dad, hes killing the rabbits, although he missed him, we atleast seen something.
