Need some help....Dog has worms

Post by Joeyman »

I know this isn't the right forum but hardly anyone looks at the beagle health section.

My male dog has worms. I noticed it this past weekend while out hunting. He took a crap and a worm was hanging there on his rear. It was white about an inch long and was moving = scrunching up and then stretching out.

A little later he went again and this time I saw about 4 worms in the stool. It was pretty disgusting.

When I got home I gave him some Nemix-2. How many more times to I give it to him. Is it every other day or week. I'm lost. Don't know what to do.

Is there a better wormer I can use.

This morning he woke me up barking I look outside and he couldn't poop he was circling around and around trying to go. He eventually went. I didn't get a chance to see what came out.

Hey Joey,

I use SafeGuard liquid for Goats.. it's the same stuff as the safeguard for dogs just in a liquid form and much cheaper. you can buy it at most farm stores. I get mine from Buchiets in Herculanem, MO. I give 1cc for every 5lbs - 3 days in a row. The only thing i don't like about it is the 3 day treatment but other then inconvenience of haveing to do it 3 days in a row it works great since i've been using it i've never had a problem with wormy dogs.

Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Panacur or Safeguard paste. I use the equine wormer and buy it a farm supply store. One tube is about 8 bucks. I can treat 7 dogs 3 straight days with 1 tube. I just put it on the end of a hot dog or peice of meat. I do the treatment every 60 days. You have to assume they have worms. When I first started I wormed them the 3 days and followed up 14 days later to get the ones that hatched from eggs then went to 60 days. Either of these will get hooks, rounds, whips, and tapes.

I am gonig to the local Rural King farm store and will look for the things you all have mentioned.

My question is. What kind of worm does he have.

It was white about an inch long and would scruntch up and stretch out like it was trying to go back in.

Probably a bad case of round worms. Tapes are capable of getting pretty long also, but you usually only see small parts of them in their stool. Just do the panacur or safeguard regularly. Eating rabbit innards is a good way to get tapes.

That is pretty cheap, if you get Drontal+ from the vet it is usually $6-$8 a pill.

Buy the pills from Chip! Your hounds are important to you-I can tell-and I know you want to take good care of them. I'd buy enough to get the discount and keep them on hand. If one hound got worms, another one is likely. They won't go bad. JMO :)

One pill today, then another pill in a week---or maybe 10-14 days---I can't remember, but Chip will give you the directions. Anyway, it's only 2 pills per treatment. Maybe you could go together with a buddy and purchase a bottle??
