the new look

Re: the new look
buckshot101, what you were proposing to me (getting the "type in this scrambled code" thingy) was not something I could do from the admin panel. It had to be done in the board configuration, and I don't think it was even available with the php version we were using. Another good reason for the update. I'm sure Chris will call me out on whatever it was he told me to do to reduce the spam, lol. I did what I thought he said - which was make it so that all accounts had to be activated by me personally - they couldn't automatically activate on their own, but I guess it wasn't quite right. The spammers still registered, but at least they didn't get activated.

Re: the new look
It didn't have anything to do with the php version. It was 2 different mods installed on the forum that would have stopped it in it;s tracks. Something very simple the webmaster could have done in less than 15 minutes.

Well, there you have it. I'm not the webmaster. I'm just the admin/owner. I guess I should have forwarded your info to Chris and held his feet to the fire. I hope you haven't suffered horribly in the interim.

Re: the new look
NO, I didn't suffer, Just hope none of forum visitors suffered from clicking on the bogus links as my Norton Internet Security blocked a trojan horse off here from one of those links. I was being nice in 2006 when I emailed you the solution to your the problem the forum was having. I had thought when you told me you were forwarding the info to Chris, it would be fixed.Bev wrote:Well, there you have it. I'm not the webmaster. I'm just the admin/owner. Having that type of junk for forum users to take the chance of messing their computers up is why I contacted you. Seeing as you are the owner, I brought it to your attention as well as the solution.
That is also why I warned my forum users that also use this forum about the issue when I saw nothing was done about it on here.
I guess I take forum safety for users a little more important. I don't want something on my forum that cause their computers harm. I had thought that maybe you felt the same way so I contacted you with a heads up and the info back then.
Not all computer users are computer savvy and have the proper programs installed on their computer to protect them from things such as trojan horses, and etc.. I do so I was able to block it and then give you the heads up with the issue.

Re: the new look
I changed to firefox browser a good while back. I like it and have a lot less trouble since switching from IE. It won't work on this board now, or at least I don't know how to make it work. Does anyone?
Larry G
PS: Looks like the board has now become a "smilies smorgasbord". Yay, that way we can all reaallly have fun without having to type.... just point and click.... enjoy!

Larry, I don't know what your talking about. I just wanted to out do Danny. Board looks good. Color change would be nice though. I had to dim my monitor first time I logged on.
Re: the new look

I Am a Netscape user and COULD NOT get on the boards using it i did Some research and found out that phBB will not support the older versions of Mozzila Firefox which is what Netscape is......
YOU CAN still use it just have to have the latest version of it...
So more Downloading and upgrading.not sure What i am Going to Do yet as IE has just to Dang many Security issues and tracking Issues. So in the meantime i am using the newer Version of Netscape 8.1.3 Dont like it but its better than IE
Have to install and set over a dozen settings in Norton and Spybot and Adaware just to protect my System using IE only had to set it once for Netscape.
As an Example had 7 hits from Trojans and 15 instances of Spyware in 30 min using IE ONE in Netscape
SOOOOO Change aint Always for the better..............
BUT I DO THANK you both Bev and Chris for the boards I will work out my security issues

Re: the new look
I assume this means you are not being nice now? I did forward the info to Chris. There may have been a reason he couldn't do it of which we are unaware. When you saw it wasn't fixed to your liking, perhaps you should have contacted him yourself. Each of us only has 24-hours in a day.Buckshot101 wrote:NO, I didn't suffer, Just hope none of forum visitors suffered from clicking on the bogus links as my Norton Internet Security blocked a trojan horse off here from one of those links. You get a gold star for that noble gesture.Having that type of junk for forum users to take the chance of messing their computers up is why I contacted you. Seeing as you are the owner, I brought it to your attention as well as the solution.
That is also why I warned my forum users that also use this forum about the issue when I saw nothing was done about it on here.
Ahhhh, yes...forum safety. One can't be too zealous about forum safety! (You don't happen to work for OSHA, do you?) Perhaps for a small fee I can issue some safety glasses for the users until I can get the color scheme adjusted to a more subdued color scheme. I wouldn't want to be responsible for damage caused to anyone's eyes. I guess I was more concerned about keeping the users from calling each other MFs, SOBs, slandering each other, swearing in front of the kids who visit here...you know, trifling stuff like that. My bad.I guess I take forum safety for users a little more important. I don't want something on my forum that cause their computers harm. I had thought that maybe you felt the same way so I contacted you with a heads up and the info back then.
I appreciated the heads up - I really did. I also figured that even the most unsavy of computer users have already heard of anti-virus programs and anti-spyware. Did you happen to post here what programs you know people should have on their computers to keep them safe, and/or give them the links to research it? If not, maybe you can do that now, because eventually the spammers and dataminers will be able to break this php version as well, and we will have to upgrade again. Such is life and technology. Not all computer users are computer savvy and have the proper programs installed on their computer to protect them from things such as trojan horses, and etc.. I do so I was able to block it and then give you the heads up with the issue.
Anyone who surfs the web, uses peer-to-peer programs, or a free web-based e-mail is taking a risk. It's obviously a risk they've chosen for the sake of entertainment, knowledge, and communication. I've gotten junk on my computer from visiting NBC (the broadcasting company's) site. If I thought this message board (with all its flaws) was going to cause all the members' computers to suddenly melt into a puddle of metal, plastic, and silicone on their desks, I'd take it down. Until then folks, I'd suggest you get Norton or McAfee installed on your computer, and also get Ad-Aware 2007 right here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php it's a free download, and if you run it once in a while you can clean the dataminers and other such uglies from your computer. Who knows? It might even cure your impetigo -- a very serious concern.
I'm sorry, Buckshot101 to appear flippant about an issue that's evidently near and dear to your heart, (forum safety and all) but I've been to the bowels of hell and back in the last couple of years, and have been crucified for so many stupid things over the years, that this is not going to be one of them. If you could find it in your heart to be nice to me in 2008 also, I could finally die a happy woman.

Re: the new look
LOL, contact Chris..............I am still waiting for him to contact me back about his server trying to hack into my server. Your the website owner, I shouldn't be the one contacting your webmaster.
Bev, I am sorry if you took it the wrong way.........I guess in my opinion you dropped the ball after I contacted you with the solution to the problem the forum had. Specially seeing how that was back in Aug of 2006.
I guess I thought when someone contacted you alerting you to that fact that there is links that can cause damage to your forum members users computer, you would have cared enough to have the webmaster fix it. And when it wasn't fixed, reminded him.
I know I was protected but that doesn't mean all your other forum users were protected.
Bev, no offense, I have 3 times the members on my forum than on here so I am very aware of of how much time is involved in "keeping the users from calling each other MFs, SOBs, slandering each other, swearing in front of the kids who visit here".
But since your webmaster would have done those 15 minutes of coding to fix the problem, just can't see how dealing with questionable post would have interfered with Chris making the changes?
I know "keeping the users from calling each other MFs, SOBs, slandering each other, swearing in front of the kids who visit here" is very important but so is keeping your user safe from harmful links that can damage your computer.
I know first hand running and managing forums and all that goes on behind then scenes. I know how much is involved. From what you do on here to what Chris does.
As a forum user on here who discovered a major problem with link that can harm computers and stopped a trojan horse install, I just felt youlet all forum users down including myself by not taking the bull by the horns and having the issue fixed. I rarely clicked on links after that incident as I felt the forum was no longer safe.
Anyhow, I am glad to see you got fixed.....better late than never I guess.

Re: the new look
O.K. on to the really important stuff. Bev why can't I find that little martini glass in my list of emicons. I want one, and I want it now.
please

Re: the new look
...I suppose it would be fair to say I've dropped a lot of balls in my days... This is just a tip, but knowing Chris, (and how busy he stays - as do I) I'm sure if you approached him in the same manner you've been speaking to me, I wouldn't expect him to call you back anytime soon. Some of us don't appreciate being talked to like we're being scolded by a parent.Buckshot101 wrote:....I guess in my opinion you dropped the ball after I contacted you with the solution to the problem the forum had.
Bully for you. No offense taken at your successful career at a much busier board. Plenty of offense taken at being accused of not caring about these board members. You should go to Television Without Pity sometime. It would put things in perspective for you when it comes to the sizes of message boards.Bev, no offense, I have 3 times the members on my forum than on here so I am very aware of of how much time is involved in "keeping the users from calling each other MFs, SOBs, slandering each other, swearing in front of the kids who visit here".
I take plenty of bull as it is. I'll make you a deal. I will take responsibility for neglecting this monumental safety issue, if you can find it within yourself to deal with the injustice of it all. What say we call this issue a wrap, and go about learning to use the new board? As a forum user on here who discovered a major problem with link that can harm computers and stopped a trojan horse install, I just felt youlet all forum users down including myself by not taking the bull by the horns and having the issue fixed.
Greg H, I get little extra emoticons from those spyware-laden free sites

Cheers! (lol)
