We're still running hard here in the Northern & Central parts of VA. Have had some phenomenal runs and a few runs that were embarrassing but what can you do? Going out again tomorrow a.m. to a honey hole that I run at it's loaded w/ rabbits and they DON'T hole up.

Breeze,

How was your running? Once again it's raining here again. We got rained out on yesterday and it's a repeat today. But I'm not complaining, we need it. The deer hunters only have 6 days left! And they can't come and go soon enough. With this being the last week of deer season be accountable of all your hounds. The deer hunters will go into a freenzy this week knowing it's about to end for them. They'll be picking up strays, pets, cats, coons and possums. They'll pick up and hunt anything they think will run a deer so they can make a drive, lol!!! Kinda like the redskins when they play the Cowboys today. The skins and their fans will be really desperate to get into the playoffs. Hey but thats another story. :D

I'm ready for some heads up running!

Go Skins !!!
I am not from VA, but I am close. My mother used to call me her Virginia Gentleman. Deer season closes on 1/1/08,a little over 24 hours :D . Nate little Birdie is making a bid for the title in the early season running. We have had much better running the last few weeks. Amazing what a little rain and some cool weather will do. Good spots are hit or miss. Some of the best looking spots we only jump 1 or 2. Then last week we hit a spot and the rabbits were stacked up pretty thick and the last run was as good as any the whole day. I love to hear them pound. The rabbits so far have been laying pretty tight. I have seen two caught on the jump, one stepped on and some dive at it near misses.

Kerr,

It's good to hear that Birdie is turning out well. Only if she was a big. Well you can't have everything.

Enjoy skins fans, we gave you one. Somehow I don't think Seattle will.

Southwestern VA

Mike Crabtree, Bo Clements, and myself each hounds on the ground during this hunt.

I cant remember how many we jumped but we didnt try real hard to kill a bunch. We had a young boy with us who killed his limit (6), it was his first time rabbit hunting over dogs, and he had a real good time.

It was my turn to clean rabbits so I got a picture of them with one of hounds, all of the dogs done good, she is just the one I have the best luck with gettin her to stand.

West central part of the state, we are having some big runs. As a group, we limit ourselves to 2 rabbits a day. The reason for that is we don't eat them but do know an old man that takes them.
We continue to run after we get our two rabbits and they seem to be the best runs. Here lately, all the rabbits want to run as we hunt in a groundhog infested area and they stay up and run and it's only going to get better. Deer season has not been an issue as we hunt private farms and know if they are deer hunting or not. Best of luck to all the Va. boys the rest of the season.

Good guess, I think it's 6 classes and a lab  Should have a peice of paper with my name on it come May.

Dragon Run (big swamp) finally froze up pushing the big deer out. We killed two 9 pointers over 20 inches wide and ran 3 more about that size today. I'll be glad when tomorrow is over, I would have rather rabbit hunted for 3 straight weeks than deer. I don't guess I should complain, a day in the bushes is a day in the bushes :)

Had some awesome running today...

Got into a bunch of rabbits after lunch...we did plenty of missing but it's just as fun to miss as to kill. Think we ended up with 3 or 4 rabbits and a red fox :) Didn't hardly have to go in the woods all day either the rabbits came to us.

Luke,

Sounds like you guys had a great deer season and now you're having some great rabbit running!

I hunted my northern hare dogs in the 70 degree heat yesterday. All ran with their heads up. There was only 2 of us hunting a huge farm. Neither of us shot but the chases were outstanding! Every rabbit ran big and ended up going to ground. I'm giving them a break today, it's supposed to be 70 plus, but I'll be back out there on Thursday. When this weather cools we'll get together.
