Scratching a dog
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
Years ago we entered horses in AQHA shows to get more points. I may be wrong but i believe if you scratch in todays horse shows it doesnt count toward points..in other words you have to show..we would even pay someones entry just for them to ride in to get more entrys...it happens people will always find ways to beat the system..but i will tell you this constant complaining is going to drive off new people to the game.

Danny- Here is what happens next to Ol Blue:
Fred builds up the points on ole Blue in the Grands over the course of the year. (Couldnt really be practical to have this come up in the Opens or Champions class due to the size of class) Then he packs him to the HOY runoff, since he got all those points at the local hunts because he had the entire Grands class in his dog box, where Ol Blue (who can barely even track a rabbit anymore since he has spent every weekend in the back of the box over the past year instead of being ran by Fred) looks like a terd on a stick and Ol Fred is standing there scratching his head (in between trying to get ol Blue to pack with the other dogs- at this point he is not even wanting to pack up, see above about spending all that time in the box every weekend) and then the scorecard comes to the handlers about an hour later and ol Blue has ZERO points. The winner of the cast jumped 2 rabbits and had 6 checks. So the winning dog has 230 points, Ol Blue nothing.
Well ol Fred got cheated! The ARHA judge let his buddy's dog win Fred says, while Fred declares that he will talk to the Master of Hounds when he gets back at the clubhouse! After getting in a fist fight with the judge and MOH, Fred is carted to the hospital (Ol Blue goes with him, nobody wants to pack home a Grand that wont pack up and run with the other dogs) and Fred is later released from the ICU unit and is barred from all future competitions in ARHA.
Okay- I may have gotten a little over dramatic, but.....
Moral of the story- if you dont want to win, stay at home.
If Little Pack would keep the hound in their CURRENT class during the calendar year before moving up, this wouldnt be an issue. I think all Open dogs should stay Opens until Dec. 31st, then move to the Champs, and so forth. This way owners wouldnt have to scratch their dogs to prevent a win from moving them on and possibly losing the chance of getting a dog in the next year's runoff.

I think that I have a great idea for the dog scratching issues .Me or a representitive from my club [ SEOBC ] will take this to the rules meeting . If you scratch your hound for any thing other than a medical situation whatever points that you would have received should be deducted .

I dont agree with that. The owner has the right to do whatever they want with their hound.
Not saying that scratching a hound to avoid a win is ever the right thing to do, but you cant tell a hound owner he cant scratch his dog.
What happens if and when this passed, the hound owner says his dog is sick, the judge says it isnt, and the owner/handler scratches the hound anyway???
Then where are you at? Square one.

rule
since there will be no hoy next yr,i'd say that there won't be as much of it going on.the biggest thing that i didn't like about it was when the handler would do it after the cast was over.that isn't right and should have never been allowed.if you let your dog stay on the ground to the end of the cast, you should not be able to scratch it after the cast is over.i understand that the handler should have the right to scratch his dog during the cast.anything could happen, the dog might be hurt or sick, you might have a family emg.or you might be getting srewed by a judge and just don't want to put up with it any longer.bottom line is,if you allow your dog to stay on the ground to the end of the cast and it turns out to be the winner, you shouldn't be allowed to scratch it to keep it from winning!!!!the cast is already over and things should be final.nkc should make that a rule and it is something they could do with ease.that's my opinion, but everybody has one.

it is all this scrathing dogs off wins,or refusing to sign scorecards to keep them open, signin up 25 dogs and only 12 compete in the field, not scoring dogs cause of who the owner is,ect.ect. is why we don't have a hoy anymore, now,if nkc would have had a governing body set aside for just the hoy,or,started disciplining people for eunethical actions like mentioned before, the hoy may have worked out, but, this is the bottom line.......
you put a lil bit of money,a title such as hoy,and a trophy mixed with the human factor, unless you have rules for just about every lil loophole,it will never work.
