Pregnancy
I have a 4 year old female that I hope is pregnant. I would like any advice on how to properly care for her. Also how long after she becomes pregnant will she start to show? Thank you.
Why go to the bucket, when you can go to the well?
Congrats! I would feed her a good adult dog food (not puppy) for about the first 3 weeks give her the same ration as she normally gets. You should be able to tell she is pregnant at 4 or 5 weeks post breeding. about 3 weeks before she is due you can increase her food by about 1 cup and make it 2 daily feedings. Don't give her calcium or supplements. Its just not necessary. Once her puppies are born then you can pour on the feed and give her extra calcium such as cottage cheese, yogurt etc.
Hope you get a nice litter!

Thank you for your advice. I have been giving her a little more food than usual. I feed Diamond or Maximum nutrition. I am very excited this will be her first litter.

I'm sure you'll do just fine with her. Make sure she exercises a good bit until she is real close to whelping.nelson kennels wrote:Thank you for your advice. I have been giving her a little more food than usual. I feed Diamond or Maximum nutrition. I am very excited this will be her first litter.

I recommend adding CalTabs to her canned food (all nursing bitches deserve canned food when they are nursing), having Esbilac powder on hand and mixing some of that with warm water into her kibble after delivery, and have a product called Calsorb on hand. You can aquire all of these products from http://www.revivalanimalhealth.com
While you are there grab a bottle of FishMOx (amoxicillan) too
Thats the way to buy it without a prescription.
This stuff is great to have on hand!!
Here is a super library of links for you too!

Im with Windkist on not overfeeding. I like to feed them what keeps them in good shape until they have puppies. Some bitches take more some less, but you can bet youll need to double her feed after whelping if it is cold and she has a decent litter.
A heating pad from Jeffers is well worth the money for puppies this time of year.

Pregnancy
I have moved her inside for the pregnancy. I will keep her there until the puppies are between 6 and 8 weeks.
