How safe is safeguard?

I know this isnt the beagle health forum, but I figured a few more people would be on this one and have used safeguard dewormer. I read on one of the forums and they mention of using the safeguard horse dewormer in a smaller doseage in which they gave the formula. I bought the safeguard paste, thats all I could find. Has anybody had any problems resulting from using this dewormer. Its kind of hard to give the exact amount needed, and I just want to be on the safe side.

I use it and haven't had a problem.

I use the 10% suspension and dose it 1ml per 5 pounds for 3 days straight. I am not sure about the paste but have not heard of any problems resulting of its use. From what i have read it is very safe.

Its very safe and so is the horse pyrantel which is what I use with young puppies 4 weeks and older. You do want the dosage right though or otherwise its a waste of money ;-)

I appreciate the advice, I have a couple of youngs ones and didnt want to take any chance, and save vet bills for things I can do myself. Theres definely alot of knowledge on this web site, its one of the best.

Ohiogary,
Safeguard's ctive ingredient is Fenbendazol which is the same active inredient as panicure which is what the vet gives for hooks, rounds and whips.
I have used it for years in the horse paste form. Never had any problems.

southern how do you measure out the dosage in the paste form????

i just kinda guess and i don't like to do that............

Hey guys, just a quick note to add....please be VERY careful what you put on your dogs. I bought some flea/tick drops from Wal-Mart (Hartz) and used it on my beagles. It almost killed one of them. She lost her hair, wouldn't eat, developed a skin rash the likes of which I've never seen in a dog, and hid for about two weeks. I wrote Hartz about the experience but of course I never received a reply. Anyway, please be careful! My vet wasn't the least bit surprised and made a statement something to the effect of "You'd be surprised how many animals I've treated because of that product and one's like it. A whole lot of them die".

I've heard some horror stories about that company (Hartz Mountain) and their products are basically worthless junk aimed at unsophisticated pet owners.

Although this is sad, it is true with just about any medicine. Just take penicillin, the discovery of a lifetime for antibiotics. Most people are just fine taking it, but there are people that are allergic to it as well and even die from taking it. I have used Hartz for a number of years without any issues, but there may come a day that I too find out that one of my dogs won't tolerate it.

Thanks Emery. You're right....there's no way of telling how your dog is going to react to certain medications. I treated four dogs, three were fine and one about died. I guess it could happen with ANY medication, but the vet said he sees more problems out of the "cheaper" drugs like Hartz. I'm not trying to bash Hartz or anything(although they could have at least replied), just relating a personal experience that might help others. You have yourself a great day Emery!
