Pads Peeling

Post by Huntin54 »

Today my when I was out hunting my dad went to take the pups out and when Katie got out of the pen she wouldn't put her back right leg down. So he put her back in the pen. Well I looked at it and the pad is peeling off of it. And her 2 front paws the pads are peeling off of them as well.

Does anyone know what this is and if its normal? Should I take her to the vet?

She probably was ran on frozen ground or Ice. It will wreak Havoc on dogs pads.

Haven't heard of the actual pad peeling off the paw. If they get rock salt in the paws this can definitely do some major damage, but again, that will usually cause lesions on the pads and not just cause the entire pad to peel off. Could also have something to do with how she's being kenneled. Keeping on wire seems to damage the paws/joints over time. Concrete can also be very, very hard on the pads, especially with the cold weather. I have concrete runs but have a few feet of kennel decking just so they don't have to lie on or always walk on such a hard surface. Gravel is also much easier on their feet ...

Really don't know for certain what could be causing it, but she really needs to see a Vet. Sounds like she may need stitches to keep the pad in place if any of it is living tissue. I don't think that if the entire paw pad peels off it will completely grow back again, altho I may be wrong.

Keep us posted.

Yea she was ran on frost grass and wet areas a while ago. She is also kenneled on wire I just switched her to that a few months ago.

Its the hard pard of the paw pad that is peeling like a skin or something.

Thanks for the info guys, i'm going to see how it is today then call the vet.

My beagles pads are cracking from all the snow and ice we are having here in NH. I'm putting a product on them called "Mushers Secret." It's similar to putting Hoof Flex on your horses hooves to keep them from cracking.

YUP, Bag Balm is another good thing to keep in stock :)
I might have to put booties on my best show bitch because she looks like she has a puncture on one of her toes and I don't think the Mushers Secret can heal it. I gave her some amoxi and might put some ointment and a bootie on her...just wondering if she'll keep it on and not chew it off....

Honey Pot,

I put bag balm on all the paws. The one that had most of the hard part peeled off I wrapped with vet wrap then put duck tape over it to keep it on there she didn't seem to bother it at all.
