Hints to get a dog to pack up
I have a male dog who seems to do OK by himself, will jump and run his own rabbit, maybe not as well as some but will do it none the less. He has been with a pack of dogs maybe 6 or 8 times, but will not go with them when they are running. The last time out he actually screwed up the hunt for the other dogs by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, cutting off the rabbit, etc. Should I ship him, or can I correct him. The pack was not mine, I have three dogs, but one is a pup and the other has just started, so most of his running has been solo so far. He is about 3 years old, and I didn't get him started until about a year and a half ago( my fault, I'm a newby). Any advise appreciated.
Thanks,
Bryan
Thanks,
Bryan
If I was doin any better today, I couldn't stand it!

I think a good idea is to let him get to know the hounds you want him to pack up with. Put them in the same kennel together or same box, or however you have your place setup. After a while he'll get comfortable around those dogs.
Born to chase, bred to catch. Fast Feet Kennels

Nothing personal, I enjoy your posts, but when ever you comment on a thread your oversize avatar makes me have to scroll left to right to read the posts....no big deal I guess.
I apologize.....I didn't know that.

Is anyone else having to scroll left to right or do the pics appear small. The appear small on my screen.
It could be a setting with your internet. You can mess around in your view toolbar and see if that helps.
Let me know. Not trying to hi-jack the thread. You can PM me.
Dogs that won't hark up to a running pack are usually bred to be extremely independent and are of a slower speed than the pack. I've owned a few that were very good dogs when hunted alone or with a pack that ran their speed. If you put them with a fast rough pack they would quit and go find another rabbit. It's very disruptive to try to run a pack of dogs where one or more run at a much slower speed.
You will probably save time and have less frustration if you get another dog and let someone who runs his speed take him.

packing up
I strongly agree with Del and TC. Works good on older dogs to put a little more drive in them once in a while.

Kennel him with another dog. Preferably 1 that will he will be expected to pack with on hunts. ( A older female works great). I had 1 do the same thing kenneled him with a old bitch and after a couple runs together he started honoring all dogs . Nowdays if another dog jumps when he harks to them you best not be in the way..
