Now that`s a great thing to do is posting signs,I would definetly respect the trapper also.we need to all work together.as for the conibears on the runways,it sounds like somebody is doing some illegal trapping of hare.I am no expert on trapping, but i dont think to many people use conibears for fox and coyote.I could be wrong though.Thank god you were right there when your dog was caught!Them big conibears scare me.

birmi1nr it is illegal to:
Set a body-gripping or conibear-type trap larger than six inches in width (as
measured inside the jaw hinges) on dry lands that are publicly owned, or over
frozen submerged publicly owned bottomlands or on commercial forest lands
(page 31) unless it is four feet or more above the ground or placed in a box or
similar container inaccessible to dogs.
straight from the hunting guide. I'm not an expert but 110 and 220 might be legal but I don't think 330s are.

birmi1nr call the DNR and report this location time and date immediately. I also let trappers TallPaul and another buddy trap my property and have never had an issue with my hounds or labs getting stung. Just this year a friend of ours trapped 2 grey foxes and a redfox in the fence row along our hay field. How many bunnies, pheasants, quail, partridge and other game type critters survived with just these 3 predators taken on 40 acres?

The guy did have a name tag on his trap with his phone #. I called and let a message for the guy (no return call) asking him how many other traps like that he had in the area, because it is one of my better spots in the NLP for hares and I would like to continue to run there, but I don't want to chance it again if he has more in the area set like that.
Last year my son took my best dog on a hunt with some friends. He all at once lost track of her so he started hollering and looking. He found her in a conibear he said she appeared dead. Believe it or not he got her out and started blowing in her nose. She started coming around. I myself trapped mink and muskrat for many years started when i had to use my foot to set them. I think in Indiana the state is so populated we have little room to set land traps. Usually it is probably someone uneducated of trapping.
160 and 220 conibears have a 10 inch spread and are not legal for ground trapping in Michigan unless elevated as stated. A 110 is legal but very unlikely to cause you dog anything but a sore nose. On land the 110 would be used for weasals or mink which are extremely hard on baby rabbits.
If your seeing large conibears on land as stated above that needs to be reported. Inspect the trap for the required identification. If they are violating to set on dry land, its unlikely they will put their name on the trap.

I lost a dog to an illegal set 220 conibear 3 years ago, there was a name and number on it. The dnr tried to contact this person, guess what? No such person and the address was an empty lot. They were not dumb enough to put there own name on it. What's worse about this is I had a young, very good male with her and when she got caught he headed for me, unfortunately he went out to a main highway instead of across country and a semi made a large blood spot out of him, yep 2 good young dogs in one day gone because of an illegal trap. I have nothing against trapping or any other legal activity but the slobs that set these illegally are just that slobs. Hare
