Booster Shot or Not
Ok here is the question I gave all my pups their 7 way shot at 8 weeks. It is now 12 and was getting ready to give them their second 7 way shot. I buy the solo jec from Tractor Supply. Now the question. I ran into a guy while I was buying the shots and he told me I really need to take them to the vet for a booster shot not to give them the same shot again. What is the difference between a booster shot and the first shot I gave them?
Thanks for the help.

If its just their second shot it isnt what most people consider a booster.
Its just the second in a series of shots.
What I call a booster is the single shot that I give my grown dogs once per year.
Ive never had a problem doing it myself but I dont use the same schedule that you do.
I give mine a shot at 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks, then once per year.
Im not saying my way is the only way to do it but its worked good for me so far.

All that, and you are selling your pups for $100 each? Not exactly getting rich, are you!channellkat wrote:My schedule is as follows

People have different ideas, and for different reasons. I met a man Friday who had acquired a pup I raised and sold as a pet. I asked him if he uses anything for heartworm. He said all I ever do is give some swine wormer. Heartworm and parvo are the two threats I dread most and I take pains to prevent them. No need to test for HW if you start prevention right from the get go at 8 weeks and never let up.
As far as the vaccines, even the vets disagree so there is no one right way but mine get a parvo only at 6 weeks for sure... I have less faith in the shotgun vaccines especially the 7 way or 8 way for very young pups.
And I'd be a little nervous about waiting until 8 weeks to give something to prevent parvo. It's bad around here.

I try to have the pups out the door by 8 weeks. That way I only have mine or the ones I have purchased to deal with all the shots.
The shots are only 4.95 at Tractor Supply and the Nemex lasts a while with pups. And who ever said we would get rich selling pups. I did make enough to pay my son for stud fee on his dog.
Now should I send him a bill for all my food his dog is eating.

You can give them the same shot and they will be fine.

Most vets say not to give vacs. with the Lepto protection until pups are 8wks.
Fort Dodge makes a vac. they call the PUPPY SHOT which does not contain the Lepto protection. Then they also make a vac. with the Lepto protection which they call THE PUPPY SHOT BOOSTER. So there is a BOOSTER SHOT and all shots are not the same. The SOLO-JEC7 does not contain protection for the CORONA VIRUS. And I'm not talking about the hangover you get when you have a few too many Corona Lights with a lime wedge in the neck. The Corona virus is a serious problem in my area. Worst than Parvo according to my vet. I give the following to my pups with no problem:
5wks- Fort Dodge The Puppy Shot (no lepto)
7wks- Fort Dodge The Puppyshot Booster 9wks- Fort Dodge The Puppyshot Booster (lepto, corona, parvo, and more)
11wks- Fort Dodge The Puppyshot Booster
14wks- Fort Dodge The Puppyshot Booster
I have about $30 per pup in vacs.
Where do some of these people get their info. well I get mine right here ONLINE.

I give the 5 way at 6 weeks. There is a reason you give pups a shot every 3 weeks until they reach 18 wks. If you give the shot when the mom's immunity is still in effect the antibodies will neutralize the vaccine and it will be of no effect. So, you are trying to make sure that when the mom's immunity wears off you have a vaccination in there to start the pup making it own natural antibodies to prevent those dreaded diseases such as parvo and distemper. etc. It takes the shot about two weeks to become most effective. So, there is a window in there where the pup has lost its moms immunity and the shots take effect. Heck, if ya kept em in a bubble you would only have to give the vaccine when they are 18 wks old then revaccinate at 1 year. The 5 way does not have the lepto virus in it as some pups have a reaction to this. The 8 way has the lepto in addition to the corona. Also, just because you give the shots doesn't mean that your pup can not get parvo or any of the others. Sort of like taking a flu shot. You still can get the flu but if you have had the shot it is most likely that you will have a light case. Same with the pups.

By the way, you should worm at 2, 4, 6, 8. and 10 wks with a wormer that has pyrantel pamoate in it. Nemex has that ingredient. Then once a month if the pups are on dirt or where they can get worms from other sources. I tape worm twice a year whether I see them or not with drontal Plus which kills all tapes and all other worms. I think there are three different kinds of tapes. I start heartworming at about 4 to 5 months. Most vets say they need to be started by 6 months and you do not have to do a heartworm test if you start it by this time.

Sally is right about the 18 week shot! I learned the hard way - four shots at 6, 9, 12, and 16 and one of my female beagles still died from parvo at 7 monthd old. She did not eat one evening and was dead the next day. Due to the vacinations, parvo was the last thing I suspected. She passed lots of bright red blood during the night and I was certain it was poison or something punturing the LOWER bowel. However, two more of her littermates got it within a day or two. The two other littermates never got it despite being in the same kennel with the one that died. The other two that contracted the illness made a quick recovery after a not eating for two days so I figure they had developed some anti-bodies. The weird part was that, of the five littermates, the three that were most hardy at birth were the ones that got sick! I think they got more of the first milk and the shots were not strong enough to trigger the fully immune response. EVERYONE should read up on parvo at the Merck site and others - I wish I had done so sooner. I think I could have prevented the whole incident by giving the final shot just a week or two later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you only give Corona twice and 12 weeks apart?
I dont know how prevalent Corona is around here so I usually just give Solo Jec 7 each time.
So far Ive never had a problem with the lepto part of the vaccine for young pups.

I only give corona once at 18 wks. I did not give this until I started running my hounds alot in the deep south where corona is prevalent. I never hear of a case around here but I do not want to take a chance and bring it back to my kennel. When I give my hounds their yearly shot it is the 8 way.

From my research I found that corona virus only strikes puppies 6 weeks and under. Its not something adult dogs get. If you want I'll try to find the article.oakhill wrote:I only give corona once at 18 wks. I did not give this until I started running my hounds alot in the deep south where corona is prevalent.
