A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

There is no better man to deal with in beagles then Tom Sharpe. He is one of the nicest men you will ever meet in hounds. I have never heard him utter one unkind remark about anybody, and thats a fact. Every time I run in to him I have a conservation with him, whether its about hounds, his son Ryan, who I used to hang around with at trials when we were kids, or whatever else is going on in the world. He is very personable and will answer, the best he can, any questions you might have about one of his hounds.
I have thought the Round Pond dogs of Tom's as this. Very clean on the line, no side hooking or overrunning (with maybe the exception being Scout). Excellent noses AND the ability to STAY AND MAKE A CHECK from the point of loss. Mr. T, like his grandfather IFC Birchaven Bruiser, HOF, was known for having an excellent snow nose. The only thing that I have seen from the Round Pond hounds, or what I should say, came out of them is their mouth, too much of in some hounds. I have yet to see one tight in the mouth, as somebody had mentioned before, and I have seen a lot of them out of many of Tom's different studs and hounds that are top and bottom T.
i agree with kanes irish the pond stuff i have seen were line running dogs with med to med fast foot good noses with brains they diden't win from the front they won from 3 to 5 back in the pack good check dog with alot of brains maybe something were seeing less of today
Bullboy's description of the Round Pond style is exactly what I was told of Ranger Dan. Not the fastest footed dog but had the nose and would check them to death.
My dog is a brother to Gary A's dog. I don't trial, I just hunt but I am very happy with the dog. Lots of hunt and sticks to a check, no quit. Heres a short clip of him running. Please over look the red lettering on the screan but I no longer subscribe to the video service....DHl
I have to agree Tom Sharp is a good a person as I ever met a retired police officer nad always perfect gentleman in every way.He was very deserving of being voted into the hall of fame last year. That was a snowy banquet last year at Redfield ,NY.
To answer the what format question, Bullboy's description is what I have seen out of my dog. He is the only dog that I have trialed and he has been competative in both UKC formats and ARHA LP. Going to try ARHA PP next year.
Thanks Gary! I just want to add. My dog has an excellent nose. I really did not know just how good it was untel I visited and ran with a buddy of mine who's dogs are known to have great noses. We ran in september and it had been try for weeks. The ground was cracked and parched. My dog opened up and ran a rabbit, his to dogs just followed behind my dog but wouln't open. My buddy didn't know what to say, We were in a pen and there were no deer in it. He started to say that it must be a stray cat or something, Well the chase picked up and the dogs drove towards us and the rabbit ran by us with Gunner opening up and his dogs just wimpering. I just laughed, his dogs just couldn't smell it. The dog is silent and mellow in the kennel, You never hear him bark unless he is in the woods. He was started very late and ran very little when I got him and he was rough.i put alot of time into him and he smoothed out alot. He still can be a little rough at times but he will solo a rabbit for hours. When I'm out hunting he jumps 80% of the rabbits. Just trying to give you an Idea of some of his traits..........Good luck to you and Happy holidays to you too Garry A......Deerhost
I know of a double Round Pond breeding made this week. T-Tiger on top,T Shadow on bottom. I don't know if the guy is going to sell any of the pups though.Should be REAL nice.
