Went today alone jumped 8 killed 4, batteries charged so picture attached.
Running is very sluggish for some reason, very tough to drive a rabbit, mostly dogs have to gear down & work it hard to circle a bunny. I watched 2 rabbits today pull double backs & run up leaning logs trying to get some heat off them. Some go straight to ground in less than 100 yds.
Strangest thing I have noticed this year so far is all rabbits killed exception of one have been does. I can never remember it being this ratio in the past, I have always killed majority bucks by a wide margin.
This is what me & Billy Bredemeir was talkin 'bout after last month's Beedle meet'n, does are still out, that's why so many are gett'n "straight to the hole" runs... Billy says, if your kill'n does, your jump shoot'n or cutt'in um off at the holes... they don't wana run.
We only been mess'n with pups, don't feel right yet but they say cold spell acom'n. This weather does save on the heating and dog food bill tho... ;) ... I'd hate to think what they'd be do'in to us on prices if'n the weather was bad, but that's yet to come. I don't see no reason for $3.15 gas, but we can't make those "future" guys with the're crystal ball look bad......we bought a little LP gas for $1.78, but that's jest for company when maw want's to showoff use'n the gas stove...
Jest keep put'n more wood on the pile, we got plenty of bean hullins and hamhock to keep us fed.
Good hunt'n to you... ;)

I went this morning without a gun and had some excellent runnin. Saw an almost all white cottontail. Except for the very light tan color on his back he was white as snow. Also saw a red one. Do ya think some body cut there pet loose and it actually raised a litter in the wild. They ran good so I'm sure they were born wild. I took my boy back out this afternoon till dark and ran three more. Two were to far to shoot and the third never worked out. All in all a good day. Dogs were on their game, no trash problems, nothin but heart stoppin, pounding action. Life is good.

Bill P,
Thought you would be huggin mama up close instead of out in the woods this time of year. Glad them sorry dogs I sent you are putting meat in your freezer, soon as my boy gets a couple years older I am going to come see you, if I can find Canada.lol

SR ,
I know what you mean, my wife has been after me to put in some kind of heat besides wood stove but until I find something cheaper or my back gives to where I can't cut the wood looks like its for me, specially since I had 40 acres clear cut, I got enough oak tops they will rot before I get them all cut & stacked.
The hunt I had Friday was my young females, the one closest to us in the picture that is about white is 11 mos old & fighting the tree laps on those twisting Does all day peeled her head & stoved her up good, thats why I went alone I like to control my pups first shooting experiance. She will have to get it again in the morning though, she has done figured out when the gun sounds she will get some fur in her mouth. Well most of the time anyway. lol

I went Saturday for the season opener. The running was hit or miss most of the day, but we managed to bring two cottontails home. The best part was running three yearling dogs for their first gunning experience. Pete Tuck ran two pups and I ran one with our older dogs. The pups contributed and we brought them all home, so mission acomplished. Our runs were strange. One run the dogs went out like a ball of fire and started to loop and poof silence. Then they beat one around burning it up at times and struggling at times. Then about lunch time we jumped and they ran a big loop break down free, next rabbit almost the same. We probably jumped 5 or 6 in about 5.5 hours of hunting. May have been jumping does or the late leaves falling may have contributed. Overall it was a good day and some stars may have been born.

WE WENT OUT SAT. FOR THE OPENING DAY HUNT HERE IN NC. IT WAS COLD, AND FROSTY EARLY. AND IT WARMED SLIGHTLY AS THE MORNING WORE ON.
WE JUMPED 7, AND KILLED 4 IN A SHORT 4 1/2 HR. HUNT. I INTRODUCED ONE NEW YOUNG DOG TO THE GUN PACK, AND SHE FELL IN JUST LIKE SHE WAS A VETRAN. DIDN'T ACT LIKE SHE EVEN NOTICED THE 7 SHOTS THAT RANG OUT. IF THE OTHER 2 RESPOND LIKE SHE DID, THEN I'LL BE REAL PLEASED. I WILL INTRODUCE THEM 1 AT A TIME INTO THE GUN PACK.
OUR RUNNIN HERE IN THE WESTERN FOOTHILLS OF NC WAS JUST A CARBON COPY OF THAT WHICH ANTHONY SPOKE OF ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE STATE.
HEY ANTHONY, TELL PETE I SAID HELLO---WE USED TO COME UP TO PROSPECT HILLS, BEFORE YOU MOVED THE CLUB.

James,
I met you a few years ago at Bens Knob Beagle Club. I think they recruited you to judge some of our loose Little Pack dogs. I will tell Pete that you asked about him.

Just wanted to say Hi

Post by ThereHeGoes! »

New to this board, wanted to take the time to say hi. I haven't been out much this year, my wife and i had our first child, a healthy baby girl on 10-25-07 so she has taken up most of our time, which is fine by me

Image

I did get out last saturday, my sister and i took out my two beagles. Ivy is going on 3 and Penny will be a year next week.
Ivy (this is an old picture)

Penny (also an old picture)

We put up 6 rabbits and i missed two of them. ivy ran the first one heavy through a standing corn field and it came out right at my feet and right into a hole after i missed it. 2 went into neighboring property so didn't put the dogs on them. and they both ran the other ones into holes. wasn't sure what to expect with Penny, she is still young and i spent a good amount of time trying to train her, but the last 2 she was leading the charge. So anyway, just wanted to say hi and look forward to future posts

Sry bill, had no idea u had cottontail that fer North in the snow belt.
We found a pocket of them up by Park Falls Wis. but locals said that was about the limit North, winters buried them in and they died...

s.r.
i just got back from running hounds in ohio last week , had lots of fun .
i am sure of my heritage but can't say i proud of some of our people running my country !
i live on the north shore of lake erie , near the spit of land that sticks out into lake erie called long point .
as far as hare i wish they were closer it would be a another bunny to run . i was looking for patch hounds to run cottontail that had decent line control
and not to much speed , got 2 females from plowboy that are doing that fairly well , one ajusted the temp better than the other , now looking for a male to cross back but i am trying to stay around 13'' . its hard to find because i am 6 to 7 hours away to watch run to buy a started hound & can't keep buying pups because its a yr or so to see what i end up with .
so i keep watching on here

Hey Bill,
We've planned going to UP next week, I'll bring you up a small male, if you like you can meet us on the road. He's ready to start if you want to put some time in him, I only offer because he's small. You hunt him a year and if he don't suit, you owe me nothing, if he makes you happy, $300 would cover my gas and I'll send you the papers. If I didn't have faith in his ability to do what it sounds like you want, I wouldn't offer...
Just a thought of where timing and opportunity may meet... ;)
Good sport to you.
