How early do you think you can see potential in a pup? What do you look for? Any clues on how big a pup is gonna finish when they are less then 8 weeks?
I never had to worry about finish size before....LOL

I grade my puppies between 6-12 weeks. I can usually tell around the time they are on their legs which ones I am wanting to watch longer and which can go. I make final decisions between 12weeks and 5 months. You cannot tell anything now other than they are cute and sweet and are pretty colors. There will be some that catch your eye all the time and those are the ones to watch.. in my case anyway ;-) i never even worry about size. Could care less if I get 13's or 15's as long as they are good ones!

There is a measuring chart for that. You start to measure at 6.5 weeks I believe.. I never do it because I just dont' worry about it much and whatever they are is what they are and I cannot change it. Cindy!? do you have the chart for measuring puppies for size?

This chart was sent to me by Steve Church who received it from Chris Spall of MUSCATATUCK RIVER GUN DOGS. He says the boarderline hounds are of course tough to do accurately, but for the most part it has been fairly accurate. He also says he's found females are harder to get a handle on their eventual height than males, until they're about 16 weeks old.

I couldn't tell you Tiffinis. It's just what was posted. I am assuming it is if the female was close to that weight.
My first hound was a very tiny female as a pup. I assumed she would stay tiny but she's in the 15" class. She has a 13 compact body with 15 legs, so she's built for speed and she uses it well. I would have never thought when I picked her from the litter.

Yeah, our one female was the runt and went over 15. But most the Patch hounds I know are over 15. Lacie was a big pup and she is smaller then Misty.

My 5 mos. old Joe X Honey daughter is still 1/4" under 13" but I expected her to be a 15" now looking at her I am not so sure...she'll probably go right around 14" like most though
I kind of get a gut instinct for the troublesome ones...I've had one go over and some that are wishy washy...not fun fo sho!

I have heard the size debates in trialing. What about in showing. If a dog is right at 15, how often do they measure. Can a dog measure in for one show, but get measured out for another?

The problem with a Dog gettin measured out is that Folks Remember!!!
AND they WILL call for a wicket if they think they might get beat.
I Was told Once and i am Sure Cindy or leah Will set me straight if i am Wrong but if you call for a wicket on a Dog you have to pay like $25 if the dog measures in so a close one might get lucky once or twice but REMEMBER a judge can Wicket at any time........
I have seen Some dogs CH out that were Definatley OVER but then again Depends on WHO you are!!!!!

To call for a measurement in the ring you have to just ask the judge to measure whatever dog you want measured. You HAVE to be IN the ring with the dog you want measured and you can do it at anytime or class. There is no fee to do this. I personally do not call the wicket on anyone. Generally it just makes enemies and hard feelings. I feel that a breeder has to go by their own integrity and ethics and live with it. Many dogs are "right there" and will measure in one day and out the next depending on who is measuring and how the dog is standing. I have only been measured out once with a dog in the ring. The judge measured and yet when I measured her at home she was in. She did finish as a 13 inch beagle. Of course in 13's its not a DQ but, an excusal. You can be measured out 3 times and still go to 15's.

Question For ya Leah
If a Dog is measured and Found to be over Is it excused from the Ring or just not placed? Or is this up to the judge?
I have seen on 2 seperate occasions the same Dog measure out But left in the Ring then at another Show a mo later again measure Over But again left in the Ring then Go on and Win the next day. NOW to me this dog should have been Excused or had to go to the 15 class but after PERSONALLY SEEING it measure over on 3 different occasions then See it WIN its CH in the 13 Class just wondering how this worked.......
