A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
We had some backstraps wraped in bacon the other night mmm..mmm..mmm
I kill barnyard bucks/does, they come to the back side of the barnyard to bed in the thicket. no draging, just drive the tractor down to the fence, put the deer in the bucket and go hang it in the barn. My coveralls come scented fresh every night from the barn. The best coverscent I've used is cow~al~la~camode`.....
Sometimes I will keep my huntin' duds in a trashbag full of leaves for a day or so before, and I spritz a little fox pee on my boots before I walk in, but I've seen the most deer after I've lit a cigarette or poured myself a cup of coffee......lol. All said and done, there seems to be only one smell they're really focused in on.
Hubby has been a deer hunter for years (never understood what was fun about freezing your behinny off sitting in a stand HOPING you might see something) so I never bothered with deer hunting till this year.
Georgia DNR changed the rules this year and opened every day as a doe day during firearm. We can harvest 10 does and 2 bucks a year here. This means I can hunt before the cold weather hit the south
I bought a husqavarna 30-06 last year and took it this year to get new mounts on it because the old mounts were the see through kind and it couldn't be adjusted. Was shooting 10 inches off. This gun weighs 6 lbs and dates back to the late 50's to early early 60's so you just couldn't go to wal-mart and buy mounts to fit the screw pattern. I took it to a gunsmith in KY this summer and he fixed her up for me.
Opening day I was in a deer stand earlier than I had been up in months. Was thinking this wasn't fun, lol. When I got to my tripod, the wind had caught the roof and blew it over so after muscling this stand back up right with every ounce of strength I had, I KNEW I had scared every critter for a mile radious. an hour and a half later I was back home catching up on my MUCH needed beauty sleep. Figured I would try it again that afternoon in a different stand. I didn't see SQUAT but did enjoy the weather and the rabbits feeding.
After sitting in the stand less than 8 times over two weeks I FINALLY got a doe. She was a little under 100 lbs but she was my first and I amproud of her. I FINALLY understand why you guys deer hunting. That rush should be illegal when you are sitting there and out comes the deer. Nothing like it!
Kinda like peering into the brush when you hear the dogs driving towards you hunh?
I believe your hooked.
I leave for WV in a week. Can't wait!! I'm already started with permagrin Make a little stop in KY, then when I get back our season opens.
Patch, thats not nice to talk about good eats when I don't have any yet. Man I could smell that speed beef from here. My favorite is backstraps cut into chops, little salt and pepper, olive oil in a hot cast iron skillet. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Your right about cow flop. When I go to WV, I always try to step in some on the way to my stand.
Like everybody else said, hunt where the signs are trails that intersect, rub lines & scrapes.Though when the rut is in full swing scrapes can be a waste of time.If you find the does then maybe one will be in heat and bring a buck your way. They get all crazy this time of year.Other hunters leaving the woods at lunch time is a good time to be in the woods. It is easy to get caught up in the scents, rattle bags, grunt tubes and every other gimmick out there and most the time a big buck is taken without any of that stuff.Staying out there all day if possible has been more effective for me than anything.Good luck.
Itchy, I agree with you on staying in the woods. I'm generally the only woman in the woods in my group, and all the men wanna come in about 11 or 12 and get a "bloney sammich" at the corner store then go back out in the afternoon. In the past, I went with the flow, but I'm always thinkin' "What's going by my stand while I'm out here eating a balogna sandwich?"
If it's really cold but I have enough clothes on and a Slim Jim in my pocket, I can stay out all day. This year I hunt with new partners so I will be out all day if I don't knock one down early.
Well I am Still gettin used to this STAND huntin thing!!!! in the northwest i always stalk hunted the big Muleys... After you located one you just sat down and waited em out or tried to head em off. they will usually act lile a big bunnie and circle back around to where ya jumped em might be a few hours So then ya Sat and waited...

From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
My husband got me hooked on deer hunting when we were dating. I've
gone every year since. I just killed my biggest buck last week - an 8 pter.
I was shaking so hard I couldn't walk! There's nothing like that kind of
rush!! My advice is the same as the others - get in an area where deer have been seen and be still - other hunters may push 'em your way.
Good luck to all you hunters and most importantly - be safe.
Thanks for all the advise. I got everything ready last night. It's all sitting there waiting for me. I put a full tank of gas in the truck and got the dog boxes out. I'll be leaving early tomorrow morning. Hopefully this will be my year.
Backstraps are my favorite too........Pound them down some and bread them then fry em up in a skillet. Oh yeah it is very tasty.

Margrett, lol. I get that kind of rush just seeing does and spikes! If I seen an 8 pointer I would probably pee on myself
I watched a spike the other evening for 20 min or so. He came withen 50 feet of me and never knew I was there till he moved down wind. Our club rule says we can't kill a buck unless he is 4 point or better on one side. 1st offense is $50.00, second offence you are asked to leave. SOooo as I watched this buck with the saftey off and the cross hairs on him I was thinking "are you worth $50.00???" My husband is the club president so I thought better of it. Two days later I killed that doe in the SAME spot. I was WAY off on her weight as I thought she was 40 lbs or so because she was so small compared to that buck. He made 3 of her. After the fact I realize he was a cull buck and could have shot him. One of his spikes was 8-10 inches, the other was only 2-3 inches. She weighed just under 100 lbs so he was probably 150 or better.
Oh well, its a learning experience LOL. If I see him again I will get him

Hey Joey, my wife makes shiskee-bobs out of the small cuts of meat. She put Zesty Italian dressing over the bite size pieces and let's it soak in the fridg., then get them little sticks soaked in water out and puts cut tomato, squash, zukeenie, pineapple, bellepepper, deer, shrimp & cuts of polska kielbasa on the sticks alternately then puts them on the grill...yummmm...yummmm
Now that we all have the deer fever let's post some pictures of past deer. Tomorrow is opening day for rifle here. I may not see a thing but it has been a thousand years since I have missed the first day of gun season. Will go thru my pics and see if I can find some deer I have killed.
