Sorry bunnyseeker, that was me. I am at your house so I forgot to log in.
Anyway, that was more of a joke but I guarantee a org like that would take care of it. I wouldn't call them darn people for anything though. Like I said, it was more of a joke.

thankfully, rabbit and squirrel is open in louisiana, duck season youth hunt is next weekend and "big" duck season opens on the eight of november. cool front (65 degreed) supposed to come through tomorrow. i love this time of year,,,, seems like hunting season will be open forever. happy hunting.

backyard beagler,
I guess I don't get what your getting at. I agree that a hound being that thin sounds a bit far fetched as I said in the last post when I questioned if it was an exageration. But I think that comment was more to give a mental picture that the situation was extreme and not just a "lean muscled hunting hound". This is at least how I pictured what was being discussed. I stand by what I said before if these hounds are in fact starving it is everyones business that owns hounds and is responsible. While PETA is the last fanatic group that should be notified under any circumstances they are the type of people who would, excuse the pun, have a feast on this situation. Wouldn't they just love to get ahold of pictures of such so called hunting hounds in this condition. Can you imagine the damage they could inflict to all of us who pursue this past time and way of life. Every news channel on T.V. could then portray all of us as a bunch of inhumane, animal abusing whacos that are a throw back to a different time. Let's not feel so high and mighty and think that there are not those out there who would love to put us and all other hunters and trappers out to pasture. We are the minority and most people out there know very little about our ways, in this high tech, far removed from the land, techno video, sit behind a desk age. They believe what they see on the tube and when they look over at Fi Fi sleeping on the couch in the living room thats how they picture a dogs life. Try telling these folks that "We keep um real skinny cause it makes um hunt good and you can just mind your business". See how that plays in Preoria! Face it they out number us greatly and that is the audience that groups like PETA play to. Emotional, great in number voting public is who they want on their side. So go ahead and starve your hounds and allow them to be seen in such shape and when we lose the battle and the right to run hounds who will we blame? Now as far as prison goes I know of few people who have been incarcerated because they did not keep their nose out of anyones business. Must be a pretty safe place where you live if all they can find to throw in jail is busy bodies! Our prisons are full of killers, rapists, theives, druggies and molesters and we are kind of limited for space to be handing out rooms to those who "poke their nose where it don't belong". So, as I said I'm not sure I get the comment. If what you were getting at was some round about dig at me for waying in on the topic I would only say, that I believe that as long as I am respectful I have every right to speak my piece. I think I at least have just as much right to make my point as the next person.
Respectfully,
NYH

When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
NYH and others, PETA not only wants to put an end to our rights to hunt and take game, they don't believe in animal ownership period. Many are vegans (you can't eat anything with a face), and the sad part is, they prey on the house pet owner's sympathy with their campaigns.
The pet owners say "Oh yeah, that's awful. Here's a donation to help the animals", and not ONE PENNY goes for actual animal rescue or care. Same with Humane Society of United States (HSUS). Not ONE PENNEY go towards animal care. It merely serves as a cash cow for political lobbying, exorbitant administrative salaries, and a token few buck might go into printing those personalized return address mailing labels with the cute puppies and kittens on them that set the hook in those pet owners. In short, they unwittingly donate to a cause that will strip them of their rights to even own a pet. They consider the public donators "the enemy". Can you imagine how they must revel in relieving the pet owner of their extra cash to fund their worthless organization?
Also, HSUS is in no way affiliated with your local humane society or animal shelter. These shelters do not receive one thin dime or assistance from HSUS. HSUS is strictly a political organization, and anyone who would like to read up on them can click on this link and do a little snooping on your own. http://www.responsiblewildlifemanagemen ... upport.htm
Be sure to visit the other links on that page.
I know you probably already know all of this, but I saw it as a good opportunity to inform some possible newbies of the dangers in supporting "animal organizations" without completely checking them out.
Y'all have a great day!

Dogs Condition ????
Very intereresting to say the least and perhaps there are some factors that have yet to be considered.
Sounds like the dogs are skinny, thin and maybe abused and they may be getting all the feed they need " IF " they are or were in good health. Parasites can do a number on a fat dog if it is allowed to go without a proper health maintenance program. Myself i have all my beagles on full feed and they will learn to regulate their intake if given the chance. I have some dogs that eat more than others simply because they have a different motabolism. Some eat hardly any but they have it as they want it. They are exercised(run rabbits) regularly and none are fat they just look good. When i see ribs on a dog of mine ,which i have never, i will be very concerned and will get to the source of the problem which with a little time and effort can be resolved.
Now to your buddy. Some have said that those dogs belong to him so but out. Not my view at all. NYH i have your same compassion for these animals and there are effective diplomatic ways to the solution. I would as stated before look at the condition of his kennel and ask him about his maintenance schedule on his dogs. Now don't get me wrong. Don't go at him with a whip and a chair. Just mention to him that you wormed your dog last week as you thought it looked wormy and try to strike up a dialoge n that area. Does he have adequate income to support his dogs? If he doesn't he needs to wake up and only keep those numbers he can support. My buddies and i get together some times and have a dog day and work mine and his. Not a bad place to start. In our area when something like this comes to public attention the sheriff is the one that handles it and sonetimes people do go to jail. Good luck on your efforts and for those of you that may have read something into my response that i did not say let her rip.

I'm no vet or expert, but the ribs are what tell the story to me. That's what I use to judge my dogs. They should be a little visible but not to where you can count or feel each one. I adjust the food amount and sometimes type of food for each dog. ie my male only gets a cup a day. My female gets all the food she wants to an extent. She does not get fat. She has a very high metabolism rate and looks good with more food. My male is bigger but has a very slow metabolism rate and will get fat real quick if he gets too much food for the conditions I've found its a constant process of adjusting as the seasons amount of time in the field and all other condition constantly change. And for the most part I go by how their ribs look.
By the way. Whoever said something about calling PETA should be banned from the board!

NYH and others,
Anti-hunters are actually in a minority just as us hunters. Dont buy into the fact that just because they have a few famous idiots like Pamela Anderson and Paul McCartney speaking for them that they have a huge following. The majority of US citizens are NON-HUNTERS (neither anti-hunting or pro-hunting). They stand neutral. The non-hunting public is by far the most ones that get out and vote on issues come election day at the polls. They are the ones us hunters must convince our way is the correct way. You will never change the minds of the reprobate, whacko animal-rights TERRORISTS that blow up medical laboratories because they are using mice to find a cure for cancer, etc.
Everyone should go to the US Sportsman Alliance website and sign up for their legislative e-mails. I get them on a regular basis and the e-mails are always informative and to the point about upcoming anti-hunting bills, etc. They (USSA) are a super watchdog for us hunters and deserve our support!!

Hey Guys, I also have seen these dogs and when he said you can touch finger to thumb he meant using both hands you can reach around the dogs with your fingers and thumbs touching. Well anyway you cant force people to see the light. Remember the old saying you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink. just my 2 cents

The anti hunters will have to move over. I for one am against killing plants. Plants don't hurt anyone or anything except of course poison ivy and briars are king of nasty. I am against killing vegaqtables too, especially peas and carrots. Since rabbits eat and kill carrots and lettuce and other plants, I am doing what I can to keep their numbers from becoming over populated. The deer and turkeys also kill a lot of plants and I harvest them also. I never saw a hunting dog kill a plant. Plants have feelings too just like us so I completely support hunting animals that kill plants. Plants make oxygen and also help keep the earth cool and prevent erosion. SAVE THE PLANTS!!!!!!!!!!

No No Okra is a bad bad plant! it should be killed and inserted into the food chain. Okra grows big and tall and takes water away from nice plants like peas and carrots. It robs them of light too because it has big leaves and is a bad wicked plant. It is not murder but falls under the category of us versus them. I happen to be an okra disposal sight and accept freshly killed okra pods monday thru thru thursdays. You may also want to join the organization SAPEO IN YOUR EFFORTS TO SAVE THE PLANTS.
STARVEING DOGS
JERRY CROWLEY ( a country comic) ONCE SAID TO HIS FRIEND,
THOSE DOGS LOOK SKINNY, WHAT YA FEEDING THEM ???
HIS FRIEND SAID " MUSTARD GREENS " JERRY CROWLEY SAID,
" MUSTARD GREENS, MY DOGS WON'T EAT THOSE !! "
HIS FRIEND SAID " MINE WOULDN'T EITHER FOR THE FIRST 30 DAYS"
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL WHERE THE RIB CAGE IS, BUT NOT HAVE IT HANGING OUT.

"One cup a day is plenty" is crap. As plenty of people have posted, it depends on the size of the dog, the dog's activity level, the individual dog's metabolism, and the dog food. A lot of cheaper dog food's have filler that requires larger serving. I've got a 25 pound female that stays skin-and-bones even though she gets a little over 2 cups daily of some pretty dense food (Eukanuba).
Sticking your nose in other people's business is just fine. According to law, the health of a pet/livestock is public concern. If you call the police because your neighbor is abusing his dogs or not taking adequate care of them, the police/animal control get involved because it's not just your neighbor's business. I would argue that reporting crimes serious enough to imprison people is a public duty, even if that means putting "most people in prison around here." What if your daughter/wife/mother were assaulted, and there were people who knew who did it...should they keep silent because they didn't want to stick their nose in other peoples' usiness? Sure, that's extreme...but if you've got that philosophy towards crimes worthy of imprisonment, then I guess it should hold true for when it affects someone/something you care about, too.
If someone is mistreating dogs, or just unable to keep up with feeding them, etc, call your local animal control officer. Depending on where you are, that might just mean contacting your sheriff. But most counties have an animal control department/officer. You can make it anonymous, and most of the time, they just stop by to investigate and give advice/warnings. Then they follow-up and see how things are going.
If you want to see some skinny beagles, check-out some of the photos in this link. Just be forewarned...these pics came about because someone stuck their nose in someone else's business!
