Nice pics. I just got back from 6 days of running up there on Drummond's, we arrived Sunday morning and they didn't have our room ready that early so we went and dropped the hounds out and they had to run about 5 hrs after riding for about 13 hrs but they did fine. We had a blast, got some great running in. I think we almost run the dogs to much had several start limping and a couple pooping blood the last 2 days but all in all they done great. There seemed to be lots of hare and they let the dogs stay close which made it exciting. We ran into The Frenchman Thursday and got to hunt with him some Friday but after 6 days of running my dogs were about to start heading south up even if I didn't want them to lol. BTW The Frenchman and his son are great guys and if you get the chance to run with them do it. I would like to go back this year but don't know if it will happen or not.
Them hare check a hound for bottom don't they...
The rock ate the rear of the main pad and most the hide off the pasterns of ours...We had a couple get streached, up in Wis. running the swamp and passed some blood, they get beatup pretty bad with all the dead falls in the swamps...We hope to try again in Dec...

What we've taken, most are young hare killed and none after early Dec., so they've not ate alot of wood bark that makes them stronger tasting as in late season, heavy snow times. They are as good as any cottontail I've had.
We cut the hind leg off at the knee, for if not, they won't fit in the skillet...

I have lived in Michigan my whole life, been running beagles for close to thirty years, but I have never been to Drummond island. It sure makes me jealous reading posts like this, and seeing the great pictures, especially by those of you from out of state, really makes me feel I am missing out. Would some of you post a contact person or guide service or whatever I would need to get started. I think I have waited long enough. Thanks. Brian.

Pappins Lodge
Call Pappins and make a reservation at one of there cabins. They are really busy and maybe booked up for this year. No need for a guide service, just buy a county atlas of Michigan that shows state land and leave a few hares for seed.

Bev,
Thanks for the kind words-as SRpatch said, the hare taste very similar to cottontail, pretty darn good! I have heard that they are not as tasty during the winter months though.
