A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Well my little 11 year old cousin is getting anxious. He came over and we got the .243 out and shot it a few shots to make sure it was lined up. Last year he got his first deer a 4 point and he was so exited. I got it all on film and everything. He did a great job. He said he is done with those little deer now and wants a wallhanger. We will see how it goes. I have been seeing a pretty nice buck and I hope he gets him. Taking my camera again so we will see how it goes.
If anyone has any young ones that they can take and that want to go. Please try to take them. It is the future of our sport. I don't have any kids of my own but it makes my season to see how exited he gets and brings back good memories of when I was young.
Wish everyone luck and if you are lucky enough to get one please share your pics. I'll try to post one of the one he got last year later on.

My 11 yr old son cant wait, he will be up at 3 am ready to go. He killed a 3pt when he was 8 and a nice 8 pt last year at 10. He uses a .223 single shot, so far 2 shots and 2 deer. Here is a pic of last years deer. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.
Spark, I like the idea of a single-shot. My 9-year old has a NEF 28 ga. for small game. What type of single shot .223 does your son have? I am a hunter ed. instructor and we stress one-shot kills.
I wish your nephew good luck.My 13 year old is all fired up about it.He is also shooting a .243.Nowdays he runs the hounds with me and now we are deer hunting buddies.
DRAMEY, We have a Rossi matched pair .223 barrel and also a 20 gauge barrel. just unswrew the forearm screw and swap it out in 5 minutes time. So two barrels and one stock and forearm comes in a nice canvas case that is sectioned off for every peice. I have also seen them by H&R, they make a youth model, but I bought the adult size one and hes grown into it well and I use it myself sometimes very light o pack.. good luck
steve
Thanks for the reply. I have never owned a Rossi, are they pretty well built, and are they durable? A young'un can put a firearm through a lot. I remember when my son first started shooting that 28, he weighed about 50 lb. and dropped it when he shot because it knocked him down. Do you have a scope on the Rossi or iron sights, and is it pretty consistent? I am cosndiering one pending whatever you tell me about them. One more thing, does his have the wood stock or the composite?
i bought my twins matching 243 single shot youth model h&r rifles..they are 8 and can handle them just fine they both have simmons 8 point scopes on them ...the bonus is i aint out a bunch of dough and they shoot well and are durable...both of the kids are shootin 5 shots in a soda can at 75 yards...pretty good for 8 year olds in my opinion...the only thing i added to these to help them steady is shootin sticks for each ...in my opinion those make all the difference for the lil guys to be able to hold straight .....

This gun has the wood stock, just plain jane, We gave 212 for it new couple yrs ago,I put a 3x9x40 scope circle cross haired scope. this a very accurate gun he can consistantly shoot in a 4 inch circle at 100 yds. that with some name brand shells, I have sand bagged it and put them inside a 1inch circle..thing about .223 the millatary rounds are only about 2 dollars a box so practice is cheap and no kick. anyone kill any this morning? We didnt see anything. but evenings are always better for us. see ya steve
Steve, thanks for the info, the .223 military carts. makes it sound even more attractive to me, my son shoots 10 bucks worth of 28s every time we shoot clays. He shoots a .22 offhand and bounces those super balls around with it, the ones about the size of a quarter. He has eyes like a hawk, 20/15 in both eyes (from his mom, I'm blind asa bat). Thanks again, DRamey
Well me and my boy just got home...empty handed
He missed his first deer this morning , he killed his first deer @ 5 years old and has a perfect record ever since (until today) We are going back again in the morning.
Breck Hammonds boy killed a nice little 7 pointer this evening on his very first deer hunting trip.
