Ryan,
I shot a gyp of mine that was in the early stages of heartworms. To me she wasn't worth the money to get her treated and I don't know of anyone that wants a dog that they're going to have to pour money into. Should I be shot?

Your right Larry, culling is so simple "even a caveman can do it", but, those who want to try and put the "human factor" on animals, have a problem with it...Larry G wrote:Tony's right, Ryan... this board is for cavemen and below.... you are too smart so get the hell outta here now!
A houndsman cares so much for his hounds and the breed, that he would do something that causes himself great pain, but looking at the future and the ramification of neglect and soft heartedness, would potentially magnify faults and setback to the breed.
To shed tears over putting to rest something you've personally created that was a failure, too take on the "responsibility" of your actions and do what is the right thing, tho it would be easier to pawn it off or contribute to the number of more unwanted animals.
No one I know loved hounds or animals more than Randall did, for he spent his life as a hermit among them, but, he said, "the trickel of blood or the ending of a animal's life never gave me any thrill" but yet he said of his hounds, "none were given or sold my failures, these I put among my loving pets, buried below the great rock where many of their names are inscribed, I often go there in sad review".
I've been guilty of coddling the weak and infirm, of holding hope for the hopeless, of prolonging the suffering of those better to have let go, all to pacify my selfish heart. Sometimes you have to walk in those shoes to understand what is the right or better thing to do.
When I can no longer stand to do what's right, I'll get out of this game...

I would like to tell yall a story maybe you'll understand me a little better.
there is an old man that lives around here,he always goes to dog and poultry swaps, and always keeps 15 to 20 beagles.now we all know the dogs that run through those swap meets aint much as far as hunting dogs...anyway,all those dogs are kept in a pen with maybe 7or 8 dogs together all the rest are chained to anything that will hold them.
well I was sitting under a shade tree bs'n with him one day when up walked this beautiful little black and tan female, maybe 10months old.I said what you want for her? he said I'll keep' r,long story short I traded with him ending up with the B/T,she never did start on rabbits so we traded back, while I was over there returning his dog,I told him that I wormed her,his reply was,I wormed three the other day over there by the pond all it took was three .22 shells, pretty cheap compared to what they eat per day.I suddenly got sick to my stomach,I loaded up my dog thankfull to have him back, and went home.
my point is there are to many irresponseable dog owners out there that make us folks that are passionate about what we do with our hunting dogs look bad.
now it may be his legal right but do yall think his method of "worming" dogs is right??
thats a true story by the way.

I think Ryan's just saying to be responsible for your dogs and do right by them. I agree culling is necessary. A dog who bites humans or is aggressive to other dogs in our breed is a gonner here. I have no trouble putting it in the car and letting the vet take care of it. However, if I have one that isn't what I want to keep and its sweet and a decent little dog I'll just find it a pet home. I will NOT try to save baby puppies that are failing. Its better to let nature take its course. I do feel that a quick death is much preferred to a bad home or being turned loose to be hit by cars. Dogs don't fear death. I really don't believe they have any concept of it.Ryan wrote:I'm not saying dogs are the same as humans!! darn it!!Ryan

do you shoot dogs because they eat to much?? you would think if he couldnt afford to feed them he wouldnt buy or trade for them!!

Back in the early 90's my son and I had some experience's in Glascock Co Ga on our deer lease with feral dogs (You know somebodies CULLS who didn't get culled)!!!! Well after one of our members had a real close encounter with some of them (He had to shoot 3 of them) we took the gloves off and shot at every dog we saw in the woods... These are the type of dogs I'm a talking about,, not rabbit hounds!!!!!!!! But MOST DEER CLUBS got a hidden rule about whacking dogs during deer season whether you want to believe it or NOT!!! My hounds never hit the woods during rifle season and thats that!!!!!!!!! I stay on WMA's with very short rifle seasons....

Ryan, I understand your revulsion at what happened in your story and I agree...most of the people on this board are responsible hound owners and I just thought you painted a pretty broad stroke when you said that anyone who culled a hound except for the reasons that YOU find acceptable SHOULD BE SHOT. This is NOT the same thing as me telling that moron that threatened to shoot my hound that I would burn his house down, no matter how you try to equate it. My threat was just that, a threat to get him to NOT shoot my dog, since it wasnt running deer anyway. I also do not equate a dogs life in any manner with a persons life, not even close. With that being said however, I have only culled a few hounds, most for terminal health reasons. The ONLY time I ever took pleasure in putting a hound down was one that ATE THREE OF MY PUPS. This dog deserved it, and my wife told me after watching one of the pups get eaten that since she has a Daycare business here, if I didnt put him down she would!!! I don't think you will find ANYONE on this board that takes pleasure in having to cull a hound....
