If deer season's in you can shoot dogs in the woods!!! Ain't it funny how the law can be manipulated??? Now you shoot one in your back yard and your neighbor DON'T LIKE YOU,,, You Got A Problem!!!! Here we are having a Fit over Vick's deal and in the next three months 1 million deer a going to die across America!!!! Thats what one NAACP member said last week,,, go figure???

Yeah, and coming up in November here in Indiana I'm hopefully gonna shoot some bunnies. Now, I just purchsed a commanche .410 so I doubt I'll be a crack shot and there will probably be more misses than good hits. I hope those PETA folks ain't out there with binoculars watching how I torment those easter bunnies by scaring them to a frenzy with my near hits.
crewchief has a point here,
how ever im a big rabbit hunter as well as a big deer hunter,,,if i ever seen a beagle running a rabbit under my stand i would just watch in amazement, now i know strictly deer hunters hate rabbit hunters as they push thier deer away,,but lets all face it a rabbit dog is doing what its bred to do and thats pound rabbits however dogs can not read,,,,,i had a situation a few years back when i took a buddy hunting and he shot at a guys beagle when it was pounding a rabbit, needless to say it almost ended up in an a$$ whooping and a friendship because of him shooting at the dog,, and he was hunting with me, needless to say ill never taking a friend hunting on ground that i have permission to hunt,,,,,,

I've heard old timer's speak of this,in different words though.and the sad thing is they were just boasting their ego because the dog may not have hunted the way they liked, thats pure ignorance!!!APFII wrote:An old timer once told me he practiced the triple "S" method .Triple "S" being " shoot ,shovel and shut up" .
I've only shot one dog in my life,I ran over its hind quarters with the truck, and I hated it.
if you shoot a dog for reasons other than its suffering, trying to bite a person, or its after livestock, you should be shot.
crewchf,if someone shot my dog just because its deer season, they would have a world of trouble on their hands!Although the sad thing is I usually keep my dogs penned up during rifle season cause I know there are idiots like that everywhere.

Ryan, you are truly misguided...to state that someone who shoots a dog for reasons other than what you mentioned "should be shot" is asinine. A dog belongs to its owner and he or she has rights over it...don't try to equate a dogs life with a humans.
Oh yeah, there is this also, Crew Chief...here in my state it is AGAINST THE LAW to simply shoot a hound for running deer. Look it up in the DNR website pal, not legal to shoot anyones dog for running deer. Way too many dirtbags up here think as you do, that if a hound is running deer it is legal to blast away. I had a situation once where my hounds were running a rabbit, a deer jumped away from them and a landowner next to the STATE GAME AREA simply ASSumed that my dogs were running deer and leveled a shotgun in their general direction...after not so politely informing him that if he shot I would burn his house down, he gave up the venture. Besides, why post all of this for Anti Hunting activists to get hold of???

Times sure have changed. To me, CULL used to mean put down (destroy) or fix then give away with no papers as a pet. With dogs easily being registered in UKC, ARHA, etc. the next thing you know someone is breeding that very dog if it is just given away as a pet. To me, I like the old timers philosphy.

oh i see, only if its your dog in danger.ROFL get a clue!!!after not so politely informing him that if he shot I would burn his house down,
Yes thats what I was saying, and it aint right. To me, CULL used to mean put down (destroy)
if its a cull to you, who cares?someone else might like the dog, thats why shooting a dog to cull it, is ignorance!the next thing you know someone is breeding that very dog
should you rethink that??what if your favorite bloodline was a cull to a certain old timer? thank god not all the old timers were like that!To me, I like the old timers philosphy
It's illegal to shoot a dog running deer in the woods here in VA, even if it's on your property. I have no idea whether it's legal or not to shoot/cull one of your own, I'm sure it varies by state and the only way I'd trust to find out would be to research the laws or contact an attorney.

Well I wasn't going to post on this thread, but I thought I would add my 2 cents worth after thinking about it over night.
I think if you asked most beagle breeders, they would tell you that they are trying to better the breed. Are they necessarily breeding the type of beagle I like? Probably not. Each breeder has his or her own ideas about what they want to produce from their kennel, and that includes dealing with pups or dogs that they feel are inferior to their individual programs. The way someone culls undesirable dogs should be up to them.

the orginal post asked if it was legal to kill a dog,and all I meant is whether its legal or not some folks kill dogs for the wrong reasons.I am no animal rights activists by no means, but I know that I"m not alone on this even if some folks choose not to say anything, which as I'm learning is pointless anyway.
let me ask you something bluegrass... whats the difference if someone needs to be shot if they shoot a dog running deer,or if they shoot at one and you threaten to burn their house down? thats what makes me laugh, because there is no difference in the two statements each of us made.
Larry G,what right do you have to tell me to leave?maybe I think you should! EXCUSE me for having an opinion.
