This is a touchy subject amongst us all. Let's just stop bickering about it and move on. I don't like puppy mills any more than the next guy and every chance I get I talk to people about buying puppies from pet stores in the malls and about donating money to PETA. Puppy mills are legal and it is just someone trying to make a dollar and make a living just like the rest of us when we go to work in the morning. It doesn't mean we have to like them or support them. I certainly don't.

HPH makes valid points about trying to shut them down. All that would do is to bring legislation against those of us that breed once or twice a year. Here is a link on the Better Beagling website concerning a law that is in the making in Maine. http://www.betrbeagle.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=2115

hahaha....I'd badmouth ANY "kennel" (show, field, pet) that sold someone a dog with a massive heart defect, no papers and a rubber health certificate and then wouldn't give them their money back.

Farwest wrote:Yes, lets make puppy mills OK because Honey Pot Hounds doesn't like to do her make up in the morning  There is definitely a fine line on dealing with these issues but.......
It has nothing to do with makeup..I'm not some bimbo. Basically what I meant was my luck would be that the person would come to the door when I'm in the middle of cleaning puppy pens, look like poop (and probably have some on me somewhere  ) and everything is in typical morning disarray.
It has to do with the current legislation that is SUPPOSIDLY aimed at Puppy Mills but that ACTUALLY would wipe out us little guys instead because we don't have those perfect sanitary facilities that the USDA and Agri Nazi's deem necessary for raising healthy puppies (HA!). There is no way YOUR kennel or MINE is going to pass a USDA inspection BUT HUNTE CORPS. already DOES and will continue to!

ROFLMAO@ Larry!!!!

Well, my idea of a puppy mill is a place where they keep the breeding females in a 2' by 2' crate and breed them every time they come in season with no thought to their living conditions, pedigree, health(mental and physical), socialization, exercise and temperment. In other words, they produce pups for one reason and one reason only which is to make money and do not give a rip about the dogs they have in the kennel except for making money off them. If you can produce lots of pups and have done the research to produce good rabbit dogs, give each dog lots of love and attention, exercise, rest between litters, chances to run a rabbit, keep them healthy and updated on their shots and wormings, they can produce all the pups they want.

Seriously, I agree. I visited a puppy mill yesterday. The owner is getting old, the dogs are kept in small pens and he has a hard time hiring somebody to clean them. They never get out and are bred every heat. He had all kinds of small breed dogs and he bought 7 NKC beagle gyps to raise Puggles. He sells to pet shops and dealers who sell at big flea markets. Most of the dogs have mange and are living in filth. The old man has about 50 dogs, and I think a case could be made that they are neglected. But, as somebody already said, it is a touchy subject like child abuse (to me well deserved spanking is NOT child abuse) and abortion. I wouldn't go making trouble for him even though I do feel sorry for the dogs.

To ascertain that there is nothing "wrong" with what these operations are doing is out of line. They're ruining the whole intent and purpose of what these fine little hounds were originally created for.! It's totally irresponsible for a genuine houndsman to say this kind of hors&&^t is o.k......I say let's all be pro-active, within the limits of the law, to eradicate these idiots and educate the public at large..!

Larry,

Maybe the kindest thing to do is offer to help him? Get some guy's together and clean up and help him disperse his dogs. Have the old and infirm ones put down. Maybe he'd really like to get out from under the stress?

Just a thought..

He is getting out. That's why I was there, he advertised the Beagles for sale. I didn't want any of them, but somebody will take the dogs I hope.
