Mooredog... What? You're joking? Now I have learned something. Where does Strawberry milk come from? Red cows? Ha ha
Randy... guess Katrina was on the net when I wasn't. Surely you didn't think bluetick beagles came from a coon hound/beagle cross now did you?

I have a book with some pics of the first beagles in the USA. I will scan them if I get the time and post. Yes, they did have ticking like most beagles always have but they didn't have the minature coon hound look to them.
I think this is an interesting question and always willing to learn. I have no doubt that ticked dogs have been around for years but was there some influence by mixing in other bloodlines?

Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?
Capt. William Assheton of Va., imported from Sir A. Ashburnham of England, Imp. Blue Cap & Blue Bell, these inturn were the sire and dam to Mr. Card's Blue Cap. Tho I can't quote the source now, it was noted that George Washington had a pack of blue tic beagles, that he brought across the pond with him also.
Many many years ago, if you had a bluetic hound you could be guaranteed of having excellent hunt quality, deep scenting powers, and a beautiful bawl or belltone mouth. Drive was the only thing they may have lacked, imho...

I once worked with an old feller who always talked about Blue Cap and when he wasn't talking about them he was talking about Mt. Zion Pete. Interesting. Thanks for the post. I for one and happy that they are evidently not bred with coon hounds. Thanks for the insight SRP.S.R.Patch wrote:Capt. William Assheton of Va., imported from Sir A. Ashburnham of England, Imp. i dont know if all blue beagles came from this but several did cross blue tick coon hounds in with tri beagles to get better nose ,speed ,size .... they didnt go around announcing it to every one but it was done ,that is all im saying i know it to be fact so ,they bred them down after a couple of generations so there is some lines of blue dogs that back in their ancestory their were coon hounds

Good Info there Southern. But the CoonDog Story Makes a Good Conversation peice at the local coffe corner....LOLSouthernBeagles wrote:THE OLD TIMERS CROSSED COON DOGS WITH BEAGLES TO GIVE THEM MORE SPEED AND NOSE [BLUE TICK COON HOUNDS]![]()
I actually researched this. I had a lot of old paintings saved on my computer from the 1800's showing English pack beagles with........you guessed it, TICKING. Too bad that computer crashed and I was unable to save those pictures BUT you can get similar ones by contacting the kennel club in the UK.
Almost all beagles have this ticking gene. If you see two freckles on the legs of a hound, it has the ticking genes. The midifier genes determine how intense the ticking will be. Those of you with blueticks also know that if you breed a bluetick to a tri-color with little or no ticking, all of the pups will have some degree of ticking, but usually not as intense as the parent.
In short, a coon dog aint got a dang thing to do with the color.

Re: blue
I never seen a blue tick coon dog that can out run my beagles. They are slower than stink-off crap (or something like that).eddywilliams wrote:i dont know if all blue beagles came from this but several did cross blue tick coon hounds in with tri beagles to get better nose ,speed ,size .... they didnt go around announcing it to every one but it was done ,that is all im saying i know it to be fact so ,they bred them down after a couple of generations so there is some lines of blue dogs that back in their ancestory their were coon hounds

blut ticks
Bluetick Beagles come from Bluetick Coon hounds. huh. You would have to suppose that someone somewhere more then likely tried it. But it's not plausable to think that there are very many beagles alive today whose ancestary goes back to a blue tick coon hound.
With that being said, it would suffice to say that all Red and White Beagles can be traced back to Warfield Red as well. Maybe?
I'm sorry, the Warfield Red thing always tickles me when I see red and white beagles posted that way.....I couldn't resist.

Once upon a time, a man asked a girl " Will you marry me?" The girl said " NO." and the guy lived happily ever after and ran his dogs as much as he wanted to.
