No More August Pups

Post by Larry G »

25 straight days of 95 to 104 deg humid weather have strained me and the dogs. Been putting cold packs in the whelping box, using fans, bringing them to the AC when temp peaks. Couple that with a dam that does not want to nurse her pups and I'm done with it. My sympathies to any of you going through the same thing.

It's just as hot here in VA, but my dogs have adjusted well. When the pups whine I put a couple of frozen two liter bottles in their houses. So far so good. Mothers and pups are fine. Not to mention that they're Canadian hare hounds. Who is it that said those dogs can't adapt and adjust?

I put fans on mine and crate them in the cool basement when it's too hot.

I know where you are coming from. I have a litter of 6 that is now down to 4 due to dehydration / heat stroke. I think I am going to try to stick to the winter and early spring litters.

Had a litter a few months back and used fans to cool them pups down. It did the trick and it was close to 100 here then.

I have 2 litters right now totaling 10 pups and was worried about the heat but fans and very good mothers do the trick and they are doing great.

Personally, I love having puppies July - September more than any other time. I have a litter of 5 right now that are thriving in the warm weather. They are on the ground in a shady woods. Puppies born this time of year are just the right age to start hunting with the pack next March-April. I dislike springtime puppies because that is when running is best and I want my bitches in the pack, not out raising a litter.
