I understand your question preacher,They are those who trial only and those that own dogs and trial on occasion.I feel that if you are a DIE HARD FIELD TRIALER then it does matter how your dog places in hunts. No matter how good your dog looks @ home or out in the back pasture , if he is'nt placing very regular then he is of no use.For example if an NFL coach is pleased with a running back in practice and gives him playing time but he just does'nt produce he will be replaced.A true trialer is in it to win if that dog can't do it they look for one that can.(I am not a die hard trialer)
(I expect at least 70%)JMO
for trialers only!

First, I agree with those here who say to wait to run a hound until they are a little older, 2 on up. With that said I have not always done that. Some dogs can handle it some can't. A person I respect Greg Brown has told me many times to wait until a hound is 2 to 3 to start trialing. As he puts it: if I am taking a dog to a trial I want to win.
Second it is not always how a hound places in a trial that determines if I keep them. THE REAL QUESTION IS WILL THEY CONTRIBUTE TO MY PACK AND CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING TO SUBSIQUENT BREEDINGS. I have a reggie female that is still a pup, but has very good hunt and one of the best noses I have seen at her age. She likes the line, she is stubborn and is a great jump dog already. I bought her in hopes to breed her to my World Champion. I find that Blueback and Branko makes a very nice mix. SOOOO if she does not produce in trials, she is still going to be a fine hound and worthy of breeding to improve the line. Who knows maybe another World Champion. I have two males of similar breeding that are really showing maturity for their age, and so are their siblings.
So it is not always the % wins, but the plan, and the end game......
