lol i've never really looked at what % of trials i expect my dogs to place before i cull i look at it from a personal basis on what to cull and what not too. if they are tough dogs and competitive i am happy with them. I'm even happier when they well at trials. My dogs place quite often i've got one that has taken 2nd in his cast everytime in every format he's ran and every cast he's been on. Except for his little pack hunt in carlisle ky he placed 6th and this winners cast did'nt score any points the winner was picked on hunt and handleing
so he did'nt actualy get beat straight up. If my dogs show me promise at field trials like ringer does then they earn a permanent spot in my kennel for the most part but $ always talks as well lol. I've won hunts and gone home with my tail between my legs all with the same dog. As long as they go and don't embaress me and show me promise of a better day i keep them. i rabbit hunt and trial and i can shoot rabbits with a dog that won't win a field trial but i can shoot rabbits with a dog that will win too so i'd like to have the ones that can accomplish both. but i'd say idealy i'd like to place in at least 50% of the hunts they go to i don't want to shoot myself in the foot but i'd say i've met the quota so far.

Heck preacher if they didnt place everytime i took them i would sell sell sell. Just kidding . Iam going to try to get to some trails this year going to take a 3 year old and a 2year old and a 1 year old. i just hope that one will place. i only been to 4 hunts and placed in all 4 but know that is not always going to happen. would like to champion taffy out sso i could run one in open and the other in champion. its hard the way i work to get to some of these hunts but i believe i could win one if keep going but i enjoy meeting everyone and talking to people that run good hounds.

Hunt is #1 I look for, but they must be able to do the rest also.
Where I live rabbits are few and far between compared to most other places. You have to have a dog with hunt to get them up.
I'm talking about a dog that is still hunting hard at 10:00 AM and you haven't jumped a rabbit all morning. Any dog can run a rabbit, I need dogs to find them.

does your trial dogs have to be faulty to be good trial dogs from what ive read for the last couple years thats what it takes to be a good lp dog i have been seriously thinking about taking a young dog to the tazwell va hunt i dont belive 60 minutes of running with these fast dogs will blow my dog up if he blows up over that he couldnt be worth much to begin with thats just the way i see it i run with some guys that trials some they tell me my dogs will do great in lp i have run in a few UKC hunts lost interest real quick better bite my tounge on that one thought

I don't think you can base the quality of your dog on how it performs in a field trial. From what I have seen in my limited trial experience, there is quite a lot of "buddy judging" in ARHA LP and the best dog does not always win/place because of the judge(s), or the hunting conditions on a specific day. As long as my dog(s) gives his(her) best and doesn't do anything stupid I'll take my wins and losses as I get them and keep coming back for more
I enjoy meeting new hounds and their people and learning more every day.

i watched a champion dog, prolly three to four years old blow up last year at the lil world in a cast with dozer, ron eades pumpkin dog,and a couple other nice champs, poor lil female went in with them huntin, after about ten minutes she was back to the gallery sittin there actin scared to death, dogs runnin all around her,so a good dog can blow up quick under enough pressure.wvduece wrote:does your trial dogs have to be faulty to be good trial dogs from what ive read for the last couple years thats what it takes to be a good lp dog i have been seriously thinking about taking a young dog to the tazwell va hunt i dont belive 60 minutes of running with these fast dogs will blow my dog up if he blows up over that he couldnt be worth much to begin with thats just the way i see it i run with some guys that trials some they tell me my dogs will do great in lp i have run in a few UKC hunts lost interest real quick better bite my tounge on that one thoughtjb

I have seen clean running hounds win more trials in my limited little pack experience than faulty ones. On heavy scoring casts the cream usually rises to the top.
I know what dogs I am keeping before I ever take them to a trial. I "trial" at home at least three times a week. If they get beat they just get beat. In an hour cast luck can sometimes help you and sometimes hurts you. Trials to me are an award to the dog for performing day in and day out.

If i have a dog that does well in trails then i will trail it i have had very few dogs that i didnt trail. A good dog will do good in little pack if it has the right tools and you keep it in shape. I had one female that was only 12 1/2 inches place 95% of her trails in the top 5 and she was in over thrity trails and she passed away at the age of 3

Re: j/b./
Preacher dont let ole RAD fool ya. Hes one of the best Houndsmen to cast a hound. When he keeps one a couple of years you better believe it is a nice hound. A few of us have been fortunate enough that he is such a hard judge on a hound cause weve picked up a few over the years that were special. Still owe him big for selling me a fine hound several years ago. In Memory of Pine Mt. UmBob. LOLPREACHERS KENNEL wrote:rad i;d say ur not a trialer .. but i understand ur opinion..

trial dogs
I typically will not take a hound to a trial unless I "expect" it to win, normally that is around 2 years old or two gun seasons for me. Now of course this doesn't always happen, but the ones that I trial regularly I expect big things out of, and I know they are at least capable of winning everytime that they are cast out. I know that because I have been to enough trials and I know what it takes to win consitently, and I have ran them countless hours and know what they can and can't do. It doesn't always work out in my favor, but I know what I bring is fully capable and not just depending on luck, hunting and handling or a 10 dog hunt to make champion. I try to keep dogs based on their ability under the gun first and their ability in trials last; however the two have always seemed to match up for me. The dogs that I choose to feed normally have what it takes to do well at both or they don't stay long. A man should already know what his dog is before he gets to a trial, you may get a surprise here or there, but for the most part ole rover will do at a trial what he does when you run him at home.
