good post.........myself,i like for them to place at least 50% of the time,if they don't,i will not neccesary get rid of them cause i take into consideration how many times they get nipped in the butt by one check,or so,as lokng as my dogs give their all,and are always on the scorecard, close to the top as possible,i will give them a chance, there is a lot of luck involved in this, especialy lp,as long as their the style i like and givin it all,i am patient, too many people cull dogs or sale them before their prime,i like for a dog to kick it in arounf 4 or 5 yrs,if they are not winnin by then, goodbye!!!!!!!

To me it is according to the #s at the hunt.

I wouldnt be able to put a % on it, but the dog better get his part every time.

I start trialing mine way younger than most, I figure it should champion by 10 club hunts though.

I like for my dogs to place 50% but when they dont it is usally my fault for not having them keyed in...if they place 4th or 5th in the their cast 3times in a roll and i just cant figur out what is wrong with them or something i cant fix then they are outta here... ;) I like to win...top feels alot better than the bottom and i think everyone would agree on that lol and if i dont think the dog is ready im not going to waste my entry fee on putting it in if i dont think it can not win a cast

I run what I like if they do good in trials good if they dont good, doesnt bother me, I like to see good dogs Just Hope there Mine Most of the Time lol. Id say typically you will loose more casts than you win, but when the iron is hot you better keep em rolling.

Preacher I have a question for ya, how old is your dogs before you start expecting them to place? 1 year? 3years? I have a pup I hope will win some trials, going to enter him in a trial this month at 8 months old just to see how a ft works for myself and for him, I really don't expect much as far as placing, but I figure when he is around a year he should be showing some top 10s at least. The pup is showing promise without question, but am I aiming to high?
When all else fails take the dogs running

I WOULD AGREE WITH-- RAD --PREACHER,I HAVE RAN AND JUDGED IN MOST FORMATS. AND SO HAS RAD THE WORST POSSABLE PLACE FOR ME TO LOOK AT A DOG TO SEE IF I LIKE IT, IS AT A TRIAL.AND ESPECIALLY THE WINNERS PACK.I BREED HOUNDS THAT "HUNT HARD" NO QUIT ,,,JUMP POWER ,,BRAINS MOST OF THIS DON'T SHOW UP WHEN YOU HAVE THE SYSTEM OF JUDGING WE ARE ADOPTING EVERY HUNT --CALLED BUDDY JUDGING,,,IF MY HOUND DOES, GOOD GREAT BUT IF IT DON'T, I SURE WILL NOT CHANGE MY BREEDING PROGRAM JUST TO SATISFY.SOME TRAILER.THIS AN INTERESTING QUESTION I THINK IT GOES BACK TO BEING A HOUNDS MAN OR A BEAGLER..HEY J.M.O.--P.S.MY ANSWER IS 0%

KEEP'EM RUNNING

not tryin to tell you what to do,but as far as entering a 8 month old pup...i have seen a few pups get blown up thet way and never be right again,if i where you,i would just go watch one,go out on casts, usualy there are guys needin handlers, you could handle one of their hounds, its just,i like seein new faces at trials, but if your pup gets blown up or looks bad,it may give you a bad impression and you may get discouraged, jmho.

i highly discourage u from running that pup in a trial or even run him with dixie since i know who u run with it needs slower dogs where it can get some front....maqny a dog hads been as danny said blown up just like what u r talking about doin/.usually i like to wait till they r a yr and thats to early but i dont expect much till they r 2 then they better be makeing a showing or they gotta go!

I'm retired from trialing so I'll tell you like I told the crew from LFJ Kennels at the 2000 World Hunt. Don't let a trial dictate to you how good of a dog you have. You're supposed to know how good your dog is before you bring him to a trial. If the dog is good in your opinion it should not matter if he places or not. You should be willing to take him home and continue to feed him.

Now I'll try to answer your question as a gun hunter. Regardless of how good a dog can run a track, he must hunt. I don't need any gun toters. I gave away a 3 year old male that was gun broke and deer broke because he didn't hunt hard. He wasn't worth the shell that I was going to put him down with. There's a kid a few miles from me that's tickled pink and still can't believe he got this dog free.

Saturday morning a buddy came out to watch a few of my dogs run. As soon as I dropped the tailgate all 8 including 2 pups melted into the thicket hunting for a cottontail. With me this is the norm but he was very impressed. He asked, what do I have to do to get some of that. I told him, "spend $400." ;)

plus, some dogs fit in better in different formats more dessignated to thier runnin style, like my olest open in lp,rowdy,he does decent in lp,placed 6th in the world, but does well one trial and not the next, but like the judge that judged him sun said,he gets out front of the pack and holds on to the rabbit and wont let go,well in lp,that works against him cause he does not loose the lin eenpough to make scoring oppertunities, checks.

but he has never failed to make the winners pack in akc and has either always placed or picked up 6th,that is why i say 6th is reserved for me  wich means nada
