I found a website with information on this for you. Go to
http://www.thedachshundnetwork.com/analsacs.htm
There was too much information for me to write. We had this happen with our oldest hound a year and a half ago. Hasnt had a problem since having them expressed.
Good luck! ;)

My wife can do it and has shown other people how to do it, but I apparently can't squeeze the right places. I've never done anything but hurt a dog when trying to do it. Some dogs have no problem "expressing themselves," but other dogs do. My wife helps them along every 6-9 months, probably. If we see one scooting on its butt or can see/smell that someone has expressed its glands, we just take care of all of the dogs.

I had one have one of its anal glands rupture, and I know some other beagle people who had the same problem. Surgery and recovery looked like it wasn't much fun for the dog. And it wasn't easy to explain to people why his butt was all shaved and stitched-up, especially the little kids! I don't want to see another dog go through that again.

ok, lol this is something that I dont want to do... yuck!

I did find something very interesting in the reading... I think my female has this problem... I find her "skooting" herself on the rug outside like she has worms. Shes wormed regularly. AND a few months ago while she was sitting on my lap I found a stain on my leg from what I belive now to be the stuff.. I guess she "expressed" herself on my pant leg. (another yuck!) Now I will be taking her to the vets to see if she can further "express" her. And to let me know what to look (or smell) for....

When I first read this post I thought it might have been a joke.. But yet again I learn more and more from you guys.... THanks a bunch!

ps, Hey Goes! Can you "express" my dogs? I see by your other post you have become quite the doctor! I'll pay you $2.50 a dog.....
