Parvo or Coccidia?
I have had a rash of sick pups this week. To start off, I sent a pup to Kentucky. This pup was healthy and lively when I dropped it off. The next day he wouldn't eat or drink and became dehydrated. He later died two days later. He had bloody stool and was severly dehydrated. I had taken this pup to the vet about a week before to have him checked over.
The vet said that that only thing he had was roundworms, which I treated with Strongid. Well, the next day after this pup died, I took all my pups to the vet to have checked out. I told my vet what went on with the pup that died. He checked 3 out of the 5 pups there for parvo, and they came back negative. He said that they were in good health. I went home and let them out to run some and I noticed that one of the females that wasn't tested was not acting right at all. She was not active and looked dehydrated. So I took her back to the vet. He tested her and said that she had parvo. He kept her and later that day she died. Now, this pup the day before was just as active as ever. So I stayed at home that day to watch the others. I made up a bleach solution and sprayed down my kennels, and all of the dog bowls and water bowls. Later on that day I got them out and let the others play around. Well, I had two more that were not acting very active, and by this time I am delirious that I may loose my whole litter. So I took those two pups back to the vet. He didn't check them he just took them and said that he will administer medication. So now I am left with SO FAR 2 healthy pups at home and 2 sick pups at the vet. I checked on the ones at the vet yesterday and they wasn't very active, but the vet said that they had been up and had eaten a little. I asked him if he was for sure if it was PARVO or could it be COCCIDIOSIS. The vet said that it is PARVO. He said that he is giving them an IV and also giving them some IMC. It is pink in color. He gave me some medicine to take home to give to the other 2 pups. So,,,,I have bleached down the pens twice so far, I am giving my pups at home 2cc of this medicine twice a day, I bought some PEDIALYTE and am giving them about 6cc of it at least twice aday just to make sure they are getting some. They are eating, and drinking and are acting very playful. HOPEFULLY they will be fine,,,,,LORD WILLING. So now the question is, does this soundlike PARVO OR COCCIDIOSIS? I have read information on both, and both have pretty much the same symptoms. And being that the pups have had 2 rounds of parvo shots, I really think this is COCCIDIOSIS.

How old are these pups ? I don't know what it could be but I suspect if it is parvo they are getting it from being on the ground, parvo can live in the ground for up to 6 months to a year. I never let pups on the ground till they are at least 16 weeks old and had their last series of shots. Good luck with the remaining pups.
Expecting a carjacker or rapist or drug pusher to care that his possession or use of a gun is unlawful is like expecting a terrorist to care that his car bomb is taking up two parking spaces
Yeh,,,I think that is were I made my fatal mistake...I am kicking myself now for doing that,,,,Just lost another one at the vet. He still has one there and he isn't doing too good. Told the vet to pull the plug when he feels he needs too
Right now I have those 2 at home,,,will probably lose them the way things are going,,,,
The pups are 10 weeks old,,,I know that is the reason they got it,,,being on the ground.

This doesn't sound like coccidia. Its very rarely fatal like this. Don't beat yourself up though about them being on the ground. you have done all you can and vaccinated them and thats about all you can do. If your vet can prescribe Tamiflu for the other 2 puppies I'd try to get him to do that.

nutbush if you can keep the other 2 pups off the ground they will stand a better chance of making it, even if it is on a concrete floor away from the area where the others had been.

My guess is if the vet diagnosed the other pups w/ Parvo, thats what they all have/had. I've raised lab and beagle pups on the ground for years and never had a problem. I've heard a lot more about Parvo this year than ever, wonder if it's b/c of the milder winter we had (at least in VA)?

The virus mutates to a form that is not as susceptible to immunization by the vaccine. They assign numbers to these mutations. That is why the medical community was so scared of bird flu a while back. They feared it would change to a form that spreads easily in humans. Incidentally there was hoarding of tamiflu because of that.
Many people are convinced that parvo is an airborne virus. I haven't seen that there is any scientific evidence of that, but.... I don't know.... at one time (long, long ago) distemper was the big fear, now I don't hear too much about it.
Funny thing about parvo is how it affects different breeds. Rotties and Dobes seem to get it and die more than others. All goes back to breed creation by close breeding. A strong immune system is not high on the list of desirable qualities for some breeders.

Re: Parvo or Coccidia?
I had the same thing as you years ago, sick pup, false negative, 2 sick pups, bingo parvo. 2 lived, 4 died. Parvo is a swift killer of pups.nutbush wrote:I have had a rash of sick pups this week. I said awhile back, parvo traveled on the breeze and it does. Any thing can carry it to you, foot tracking, wild and domestic, animal or human. If a coon climbs your hutch at night to get at the food pan, if birds fly in to drink and eat from the bowls, if you handle a hound on the ground and then handle your pups in the hutch.
One kennel had a bleached carpet mat that you had to wipe your feet on before entering his kennel area for fear for what others might track in on their feet.
Heat, stress of weaning, all weaken pups and make them more prone to summer viruses. More work, but it's winter pups for me...a good bitch in heat during rabbit season is no longer the curse it once was...

Well,,,so far the angel of death has passed over the other 2 I have at home. They are the picture of health
I still have one pup at the vet. He is holding his own. I went to check on him yesterday and he was sitting up while be administered an IV. The vet told me that he looked a little better than he did that morning. I called the vet this morning and he had given him another IV. He said that he hasn't gottne worse, but he hasn't gotten better either. I guess time will tell. Still shooting PEDIALYTE down the 2 at home. They love it, can't seem to get enough of it. Please LORD spare them.

I had a litter of pups come down with parvo and I tried every thing I could get my hands on to save them. The parvogaurd was a waste of money. The only thing that worked was albon 12% that I got from a friend that buys it by the gallon. The vet will laugh at you if try to buy it from him to treat parvo but I can tell you first hand that it works. It does not kill the parvo virus, it coats the stomache and gives the puppy back his desire to eat & drink thus raising his immunity level up to fight the virus.
Well,,,out of 7 pups, I have 2 left. All 3 that were at the vet has died. Whatever it was hit them in one week and got them all....The 2 at home look healthy as ever. Even the runt is very gorgeous. I have been shooting them with pedialyte twice a day and man can I tell the difference in there coats and their temperments. I don't really know if this is from the pedialyte, but man do these 2 pups look good
