How much Nemex for pups?

Post by Ark »

The directions say 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs but how much do you give 3 or 4 week old pups?

Thanks.

Go to walmart and buy a cheap scale. You have to weigh them. Then figure it.....Divide. Go to a farm store and buy a syringe with no needle. That reads ML's or CC's

Nemex 1 cc/ml per ten pounds of body weight A twenty pound dog would get two cc's

I just wormed a litter of pups at two weeks old the biggest was 2 Lb and the smallest was 1.5 Lb. so I gave all the pups 0.2 cc of wormer.

I use a 3 CC syringe as this gives readings in tenths to make measuring easier.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your litter!

worming pups

If the liquid wormer from Hartz says to give 1tsp per 5 lbs. what should i give my pups in ml or cc? Looks like half of that would be 2.5lbs per half a teaspoon which syringed about 1.5 ml or cc. How do you divide that?

There are two formulations: Nemex (Lassie, RFD, Hartz, etc) and the Double strength version know as Nemex 2 (D-120, etc.). The regular strength is 1 tsp per 5 lbs. and the double strength is 1 tsp per 10 lbs. 1 tsp = 5 cc so it works out to 1cc per lb. with the regular strength or 1cc for 2 lbs for the double strength. So, for example a 2 lb. pup gets 2 cc's of Nemex (or 1 cc of Nemex 2). The correct dose for a 3 pounder would be 3 cc's (or 1.5 using Nemex 2). The standard small bottle is 60 ml (1 ml = 1 cc) which will treat 60 lbs of dog (or 120 if it is the double strength type). I like to be as precise as possible but it is my understanding that this particular formula has a wide margin of safety. The best way I have found to measure the medicine is to use a regular 3 cc syringe (no needle!). I usually weigh one pup or two pups each time to put me in the ballpark on dosage. If your scales are not suitable for that small an item, you can weigh the entire litter and divide by the number of pups to get an average weight. If you are more confused now, SORRY! Good luck!

I'm pretty sure it is 5ml per 10lbs. body weight for Nemex 2.

Thanks everyone but that is the kind of answer I was looking for.

I didnt really want to get into weighing each pup and figuring out the exact dosage when it doesnt seem to me like a few ounces either way would make any difference.

Thats one reason I use Nemex. Ive heard its one of the safest wormers out there.

Thanks again.

I use a Berkley fish weigher/scale and weigh the basket, then add the pup, weigh and subtract the weight. It works well and takes the guesswork out of it.

Unfortunately, timberdoodle's dose is OFF ONE DECIMAL PLACE! The correct dose of Nemex for a 2 lb. pup is 2 CC's (or 1 CC of Nemex 2) NOT 0.2 CC's. Since it is 1/10 the correct dose it will not hurt the pups but I seriously doubt it will kill worms very effectively. A few onces one way or another makes no difference in this case. However, anyone not willing to make a little effort to dose accurately probably should leave medicating to someone else. Best wishes to all!

Just got finished worming a dozen pups earlier. Nemex 2 dose is 5 cc for 10 lb. of dog, so a 4 lb. dog would get 2 cc (mL).
