The rest of us need to know so we can agree with you and be right.
It's not a matter of being right or wrong... just curious as to what the hunter verses the trialer considers a check is in terms of time.
Another curiosity- what does AKC (various formats), UKC, et.al consider a check in terms of time?
I would consider various factors - scenting conditions, time of year, etc. It may vary depending on the elements at hand. I am really not sure what the exact time should but I am certain in my OPINION that 15 seconds is a bit quick.

A 15 second breakdown is a major screw up in my book. I dont like breakdowns of any kind. And I would think every gun hunter would hate a breakdown.
Matt,
Most of the gun hunters I know don't get real upset as long as the dogs bring the rabbit to the gun in short order. Some days are really good and others not so great. At the end of the day it's still a lot of fun to be out with the hounds and good friends regardless of the elements at hand.

Again, Mike, it's not a question of being right or wrong. Just looking at how others view this topic.

check

UKC IS 1 MINUTE WITHOUT BARKING ON TRACK AFTER BEING STRUCK IN THEY ARE THEN IN A CHECK WHILE THE TIME CLOCK IS BEING RAN ON FORWARD PROGRESS [3MIN ] TOTAL ,ED I HAVENT RAN IN ARHA FOR A WHILE BUT 15SECONDS SEEMS QUICK BUT WHEN THE TRACKING IS A LOT BETTER YOU HAVE FEWER AND SHORTER LOSSES .

I just thought Ridiculous, and the way you Quoted John PA with a For Gods Sake was a little strong and contrite.

eddy,

UKC seems to have more correct and fair in my opinion.
What does AKC consider a check in terms of time, anyone?

As a hunter (waiting for the rabbit to circle), I consider my pack in a check when they quit barking for more than a few seconds - the check ending when one or more dogs begin barking and moving the track with authority and the others begin joining in. For scoring at a trial, 15 seconds for a check is a LONG time! I have seen LOTS of breakdowns that I consider a check (breakdown in forward progress - which is obvious when you are right there with the pack) that would not qualify as a "check" based on the 15 second rule of NKC/ARHA Little Pack. I have always thought checks should be 10 seconds in LP even if the judge is not able to score them all. If the pack runs really smooth, the final score in LP can be VERY low!

What Danell was saying is after he gets jump strike the dog will run so clean there won't be any other scoring and he will win the cast with 40.
I judged a cast at the work they ran the whole hour and there was 2 scoreable checks..there was a dog in the pack that ran that line like it was tied to it. It never won the cast but in my opinion was the best dog.

Pick a format you like..everyone is different..I like a dog that can hold the line..but it has to have the desire to have the front.

I agree with Chuck.

Anytime my dogs quit barking or moving the line forward, its a check to me as a hunter.

If I was standing there with my gun half up expecting a rabbit to pop up any second, 15 seconds would be a long time.

But thats just me.

thats not what i meant..i was talkin to another guy that said his dog didnt break down for 15 seconds...if it doesnt leave any checks open, then there wont be any other points to pick up...do u know what i mean...
