How to start a beagle?????

Post by Guest »

This is now my ninth pup I am trying to train. None of the other pups started either. I cant even get them to run a pet rabbit little long a wild rabbit. One good thing about this pup is it will follow dogs when I take it with my buddies. Running beagles would be so much more fun if I had a dog that would run. So any help to try to get this pup to run would be thankful. :D

Sounds like being in an icepick fight without an icepick. Did the parents and grandparents of you pup run rabbits and start brfore 1 year old. If not get rid of your pup and get one that fits the bill. If they did run rabbits, just take your pup alone for walks in a place where their are rabbits and mother nature will take over from there. Forget the yard bunnies and all the gimmicks. A true rabbit dog will train itself if exposed to the bunny scent. Just go for walks and act natural. When your pup hunts out a little, stop and wait for it to come back, then move on. If it goes out too far and stays gone too long, say 15 minutes just move on and hide from it. If it is normal it will come looking for you. Yjos makes the pup want to keep track of you nut it also learns it is OK to go hunt the cover within reason. You have to achieve a balance in this regard. By 7 to 10 months it should open on fresh scent and the rest comes with experience. If it can't keep a rabbit going for 10 minutes after it has run 10 or 20 the dog may be lacking in ability. Here again, get another dog. Most of the success with Beagles is what they inherit in regard to desire and ability.

Thanks a lot the mom and dad of this pup will not run a rabbit they are show dogs. The pup is very pretty but I would say I had better get another pup. I guess this is 200.00 my mom spent for me for nothing.

Two hundred dollars for the pet or show quality offspring of a show champion sire and dam is practically nothing. I spent more on my field quality bitch. Get your pet fixed and enjoy him as a pet. Maybe you can get a pup or started dog from field line parents some other time.

Pups

Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the pups. Rule no. 1. Papers wont run rabbits so do as i did and start with a couple of good cheap grade pups and have some fun. I've got 8 good grade pups out of good grade parents that will be 12 weeks old the week. We are already taking them out and letting them smell rabbits at this young age. Oh sure we could set in the house under the air cond and do nothing but that don't make rabbit dogs. I'm letting them go at $50 ea so if you are truly tired of spending your money on papers just give me a call. Don't get me wrong. I'm trying to go to all registerd stock but i wont cull a good grade dog.

Guest - you still there

Guest, I know this is an old post, but checking to see if you are still around. Is your pup doing any better? If not, before you fix it, I'd like to hear about its pedigree. If it's truely show stock, then your mom probably paid far more than $200 for it. Also, if you are unhappy with it, I may be interested in buying it. Let me know how you and your mom feel about this. Thanks
