when I was a girl I bred hamsters....I had quite the Habitrail setup too, it was FUN, anyway, female hamsters do that sometimes and they usually leave the head or some gross leftovers so you know for sure they did it. I've SEEN them do it.
I'm sure I probably gave a few bad mother hamsters to the cats we had or some such just reward....it is such an abomination of nature I don't blame you guys for culling those bitches one bit! A puppy is a whole lot more special than a baby rodent, I just can't imagine

"an abomination of nature", because Nature doesn't see things your way?

Bitches know when pups are not right, they cull to save the rest.
Alot of times it's things we do to upset the bitch, that causes them to be eatten.
Now, if a bitch show it to become a habit of eatting all her pups, she is spayed, for she is still useful as a rabbithound or she would never have been bred, correct?... ;)

pups

Post by Big Head »

I went from 1996 til last year and didn't try to raise a litter because I had a female that buried her pups in the floor of the pen.. They were born early with the first one or two being still born... She didn't bury those just the ones that lived... Never breed her again and did get rid of her... Decent rabbit dog but I had bought her for the purpose of raising a litter... I have heard of them eating the pups and had heard it was most common that it happened around March.....

Yes, once. Sold her to an older neighbor fella who loved a slower dog to run rabbits with. He bred her a second time and she raised the whole litter

Thank God I never experience this. In my younger days I would have probably got my .45 out and killed her like the previous post.
Today, if she is a good hunting dog I probably would keep her. It could be an act of nature that is for good reason although i doubt it is in every circumstance. Just like we have humans with p[ost partum depression that kill their babies. Pretty sick and difficult for anyone to understand. Our first instict is to kill "the bitch."

You think the female might have had bad milk and knew they was getting sick and killed them? I had a female that gave bad milk and she did that..she had a deficiency and I had to give her supplements and a shot when she was pregnant. I did that and she was fine after that..raised all the pups. Hogs do this too sometimes.

Assuming the pups are healthy and trying to give the female the benefit of the doubt

I had a female do this once back when I was raising mtn.curs. I had a neighbor up the road from us that has raised alot of dogs (Robert Kemmer founder of Kemmer Mtn Curs) tell me it was usually a mineral or vitamin defiency that caused this. He recommended feeding half a pack of raw hamburger a day to her for a week. I don't know if that was it but she only ate the 2 pups and raised the other 6. He said he had one that he knowed done this and he would start feeding raw meat to her a week before her whelping date and didn't loose anymore pups.

it is natural man, that is why i never touch a pup if possible.

if the dam feels something is wrong, they will eat them, and if a pup dies they will eat them too,i was told it put vitamins and protein in the milk for the other ones if you let her eat them, but i never could stomach it,if one died,i would get it out before they eat it,some bitches do it,some don't.

i would not have put her down for it,she didn't know any better,it is nature, just like giving birth and caring for pups, they naturally know to do it,she was killed for what she was birthed to do,be a mother and that was natural to her to eat the dead pups.

Are you SURE it was the bitch? I remember reading on several posts that snakes had been coming in and stealing the pups. I would think a bitch that was going to savage her puppies would just do it mostly at once. How was she caring for them otherwise? I think I would look for the reason rather than killing the bitch. Its not normal maternal behavior unless the puppies are sick for a bitch to do this.

No, I agree with Cindy ... *devouring* pups is not a natural reaction, and IS every bit an abomination of nature. A NORMAL reaction when a bitch senses a defect with a pup is to push it away from the litter, or even abandon it. You can't fault a bitch for that. They smell the sickness, weakness, and their own survival instinct kicks in - why should they bother feeding it, depriving themself of nutrients if its ill.
For a bitch to actually eat a live whelp, for her to go AGAINST natural instincts to protect healthy young or simply abandon a litter of sickly pups, is an unnatural, disgusting behavior. The fact is, that if this was natural, the majority of bitches would display this behavior to naturally cull the litter. They don't. Its quite rare. I would have to suspect any bitch who did this was not wired right, and I don't care what type of rabbit dog she made, we have to draw the line at what behavior we'll deal with - and why would I want to waste my $$$ feeding a bitch that made me sick to my stomach just at the sight of her? The OP did the right thing.
