Pea Gravel vs. Kennel Decking

Post by Beagled1 »

Right now we have concrete flooring in our kennel run, but I'm looking to replace it with something thats easier on the joints. I was thinking of either using pea gravel or kennel decking ... http://www.kenneldeck.com/
Which ones do you use and prefer? My only hesitation with the pea gravel is that I already have a bitch who was a rock chewer as a pup, and broke off piece of her molar on one. I'm concerned that the dogs might be tempted to use the gravel as toys. Anyone have that problem?

I'm also thinking of using the pea gravel on top fo the concrete, would that work?

What about the kennel decking? Pros, cons?

Thanks!!! :D

My whole barn is a kennel and has about 6" pea gravel. I absolutely love it, cleanup is a snap. A little lime or bleach ever so often for urine smell, mainly in the winter only is all the maintenance there is. None of mine chew on the gravel, they just dig a little for a cool spot to lay in. You'll want to put wire down under the gravel around the perimeters if you have any diggers. Dogs stay clean and healthy on it, and don't get any worn spots on them like with concrete. Depending on your soil type under the gravel you'll probably want to add an extra inch or two to the depth every couple of years. You can look at my website for a visual of it if you like.

Thanks for the tip! I took a look at your website & really do like the way the pea grave looks (and nice kennel setup, btw)! I haven't heard anything bad about the gravel so I think its something I'm going to look into ...

Check out rock dust also. I use gravel dust now and I like it better than the pea gravel I used to use. I'm not too keen on that kennel decking, although I've never seen it in person, seems like clean up would be a PITA.
