Fly Bites on ears.
Came home tonight after work and found a couple of my dogs tore up from fly bites behind the ears. Really only affected a couple of dogs, but between them scratching and the biting their ears are bleeding. I have fly traps out and my kennels are washed down daily. Any suggestions on how to avoid this. Any home remedies to speed up the healing?

I have not had a problem where I live now but several years back my vet gave me a repellent ointment that seemed to help a lot. If you do not find something that works, PM me and I will dig it out and send you the name and company info from the jar. I am not sure if it is still made but it should not be hard to find out. Good luck!

Ken,
Avon's Skin-so-soft bath oil (the kind that you have to dilute) works GREAT to keep biting insects off your dogs. It can be misted on them daily to prevent your dogs from being biten. It's really inexpensive too, it only takes a couple of ounces to make a large sprayer bottle, which lasts me a couple of weeks, using it daily.
I learned this trick from a person that does horse rescue and we also used it at the exotic animal sanctuary where I used to work. I've used it on my dogs for going on 4 years now and my dogs are no longer bothered by flys or mosquito's.

i use (WIPE) for horses it comes in a small 1/2 qt i think works great i pour some in a small jar then take a wash cloth n put in jar squeeze out the excess n wipe it on the dogs ears n legs i usaully go ove the entire dog makes their coats shine it kills ticks too. its about 10 bucks ya can get it at most feed stores, when your finished just put cloth back in jar n put lid back on it it last a lot longer using it this way a bottle will last all summer n for 10 bucks flies are gone ticks too jb

I agree with using a product for repeling flies on horses. Just visit your local feed store and you'll find a variety of sprays, ointments etc. If you have a kennel indoors you can buy a "country vet" sprayer and load it up with a fly spray can. Nothing with wings lives in my building ;-) dead dead dead! I've used it for years and it doesn't affect the dogs at all. I also, use the fly predator wasps http://www.spaldinglabs.com AMAZING! reduction in flies especially if you have horsey neighbors like I do.

I've used Sevin spray before and it gets rid of flies. I've also sprayed the inside of the doghouses w/ Off & Repel, just let it air out before you put dogs back in it.
